Christmas Elf Minion Chocolate Orange Cover / Toy

What is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly knitted Christmas Elf Minion character designed by Andrew Lucas, suitable for use as a chocolate orange cover or as a standalone stuffed toy. The finished piece measures approximately 11 centimeters in height and features the characteristic minion shape with a cylindrical body, dungaree bib details, and festive color blocking.

Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. Increasing is used to expand stitches at the beginning of the body section to create the wider cylindrical form. Decreasing techniques, specifically knit two together (k2tog) and purl two together (p2tog), are used to shape and close the toy as the body tapers toward the top. Binding and tying (B and T) is the method used to secure and finish off stitches, which involves threading the wool end through a tapestry needle and drawing up the remaining stitches before tying off securely. Hand sewing with a tapestry needle is used to seam the row ends and attach the dungaree bib component to the body.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (st st): The primary stitch throughout the pattern, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side
  • Garter stitch (gs): Mentioned in the abbreviations as knit stitch, used for textured sections
  • Knit (k): Basic knit stitch used in various applications
  • Purl (p): Basic purl stitch used in various applications
  • Knit two together (k2tog): A decrease technique that reduces stitch count by one
  • Purl two together (p2tog): A decrease technique performed on purl rows

Materials Required

This project uses 3.25mm knitting needles as the primary tool. The yarn is double knitting weight wool in multiple colors: red, green, yellow, black, white, brown, and grey. Only small oddments (leftover scraps) of each color are needed, making this an economical project for using up yarn stash. A small amount of polyester stuffing is required to fill the toy and give it dimension. A tapestry needle is essential for binding off stitches and sewing seams together.

Construction Overview

The toy is constructed in distinct sections. The body begins with 25 cast-on stitches in green wool, which are immediately increased in every stitch to create 50 stitches for the wider cylindrical form. Stocking stitch is worked for 5 rows in green, then the yarn is changed to yellow and stocking stitch continues for 18 rows to create the main body color. The body is then shaped by decreasing stitches progressively until only 13 stitches remain, which are bound and tied off. The row ends are sewn together with the wrong side facing to create a seamless tube. The dungaree bib is a separate component made by casting on 10 stitches in green wool and working stocking stitch for 5 rows, then changing to red wool and casting off. This bib is stitched to the front of the body, with additional red stitching forming a "U" shape detail to complete the minion character design.
