Product Description
Entrelac is a wondrous technique. It cannot easily be machine produced and it is beautiful to watch a slowly variegated yarn transform as the entrelac fabric grows. Christine ventures past the typical rectangular Entrelac shape to achieve a light shawlette that could be worn year-round.
This shawl has a one thick and one pointed end. It is worked from the point up and its length can be adjusted based on the amount of yarn used. 100g/420m is recommended depending on the desired size. Guage is not necessary :)
This pattern is written with specific written instructions for each triangle or square needed to construct the scarf. You will also get two charts explaining the order and pattern of squares that make up the finished scarf. I call it knit by numbers! Detailed photos and blocking examples are also included.
Christine Entrelac Shawl by Yellow Ribbon Knits
Project Overview
The Christine Entrelac Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawlette designed by Yellow Ribbon Knits. This triangular shawl departs from traditional rectangular entrelac patterns to create a versatile, lightweight accessory suitable for year-round wear. The design features one thick end and one pointed end, offering a distinctive silhouette that showcases the entrelac technique beautifully.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a shawlette—a smaller, more wearable version of a traditional shawl. The acute triangle shape makes it an elegant accessory that can be draped and styled in multiple ways. The finished piece highlights how variegated yarn transforms as the entrelac fabric develops, creating visual interest through color changes.
Entrelac Technique
Entrelac is a sophisticated knitting technique that creates an interlocking, woven appearance. This method cannot be easily replicated by machine production, making hand-knitted entrelac pieces uniquely valuable. The technique involves working small rectangular or triangular sections that are picked up and knitted in alternating directions, creating the characteristic basket-weave or lattice pattern. As the fabric grows, the interplay between the yarn's color variations and the textured stitch pattern creates a dynamic, evolving visual effect.
Construction Method
The Christine Entrelac Shawl is worked from the point upward, allowing for flexibility in the finished size. Knitters can adjust the shawl's length based on the total yardage available, making it adaptable to different yarn quantities and personal preferences. This top-down construction method is particularly useful for managing yarn consumption and achieving the desired dimensions.
Stitches and Techniques
- Entrelac stitch pattern as the primary structural element
- Pickup stitches for connecting entrelac sections
- Color-work appreciation through variegated yarn selection
- Shaping techniques to create the triangular acute angle
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Requirements: The pattern recommends 100 grams of yarn with approximately 420 meters of yardage. The designer specifically suggests Crazy Zauberball in Color 1103 Green Week as the ideal choice. However, any sock or lace weight yarn with long color changes throughout can be substituted, provided it meets the yardage requirements.
Needles: 4.5mm (US Size 7) straight or circular needles are required for this project. Circular needles offer flexibility for managing the growing fabric and are often preferred for shawl construction.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns. The entrelac technique requires attention to detail and understanding of how sections connect, making it an excellent project for expanding knitting abilities.
Design Benefits
The Christine Entrelac Shawl combines technical interest with practical wearability. The lightweight construction makes it suitable for layering across seasons, while the entrelac pattern provides visual complexity and texture that showcases both the knitter's skill and the yarn's color palette.
