Product Description
Kweh! This sock, inspired by chocobos from Final Fantasy, was originally designed as part of a collaboration with Shipyarn, who specializes in sumptuous yarn bases and fandom-inspired colorways. Lacy feathers ring the cuff, followed by playful lace down the leg and foot, framed by relaxing stockinette.
This sock is knitted from the top down and has a boomerang heel with optional mini-gusset. It features a lace cuff and stitch pattern that travels hither and thither down the leg. The socks are mirrored. This pattern works best with most yarn dyeing techniques - heavy variegation or speckles may obscure the lace pattern.
Both charted and written instructions are provided. Instructions for optional calf shaping are provided in pattern.

What Is Being Made
The Chocobo Racer is a pair of knitted socks inspired by chocobos from Final Fantasy. This downloadable knitting pattern features decorative lace elements throughout, combining playful design with wearable functionality. The socks were originally developed as part of a collaboration with Shipyarn, a yarn company known for sumptuous yarn bases and fandom-inspired colorways.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level sock pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques to create its distinctive visual appeal:
- Lace knitting: The pattern features lacy feathers that ring the cuff, followed by playful lace motifs running down the leg and foot
- Stockinette stitch: Used as a framing element to balance the lace sections and provide visual contrast
- Central double decrease (cdd): A shaping technique where two stitches are slipped together knitwise, one stitch is knitted, and the slipped stitches are passed over to create decorative decreases
- Knit shadow wrap (KSW): An advanced technique involving lifting a stitch directly below the next stitch onto the left needle and knitting it, creating subtle textural effects
- Optional calf shaping: The pattern includes an optional calf-shaping section for customized fit
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Chocobo Racer utilizes a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches. Knit stitches form the foundation of the stockinette sections, while the lace pattern sections employ decreases and yarn overs to create openwork designs. The pattern includes both charted instructions and written instructions for knitters who prefer either method. Central double decreases feature prominently in the lace motifs, and the knit shadow wrap technique adds dimension to specific areas of the design.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, offering flexibility for different yarn selections. The pattern provides multiple size options with corresponding finished circumferences ranging from 7 to 10 inches (18 to 25.5 centimeters) for the cuff area, and 8 to 11 inches (20.5 to 28 centimeters) for the leg. Knitters will need appropriate needles for their chosen yarn weight and the specified gauge. The pattern was originally developed in collaboration with Shipyarn, suggesting compatibility with high-quality yarn bases.
Pattern Format and Structure
The downloadable PDF pattern includes a comprehensive table of contents, detailed abbreviations, and multiple instructional formats. Knitters have access to both charted patterns and written instructions, accommodating different learning preferences. The pattern provides specific finished measurements and gauge information to ensure proper fit. An optional calf-shaping section allows for customization based on individual leg measurements.
