Product Description

Wrap this bad boy around your neck and stay toasty warm during those bitterly cold winter months. The completed Chevron Scarf measures 10″(25cm) x 97″(246cm), but your scarf can be any width and length you choose.

Along with the written word a chart and stitch repeat for each separate pattern stitch are provided. The number of different scarfs that can be created using the Chevron Scarf pattern is endless. Choose a solid or variegated yarn, smaller or larger size needles, choose 1, 2, 3 or all four different stitch patterns to work with just to name a few.

Seriously… If you only had the Chevron Scarf pattern to work with, you would be able to design a different scarf for every member of your family, friends, co-workers and/or neighbor! No one would be the wiser that you had simply recreated each scarf using one pattern.

The scarf was worked using Cloudborn Fibers/Superwash Merino Worsted Twist. However, any worsted or DK yarn will work. Cascade/220 Superwash; will look great as well.

Chevron Scarf by Joan Laws

Project Overview

The Chevron Scarf is a beginner-friendly knitting pattern designed by Joan Laws that creates a sophisticated striped accessory measuring 10 inches (25cm) wide by 97 inches (246cm) long. This downloadable PDF pattern demonstrates how multiple stitch patterns can be combined to produce a visually dynamic chevron effect while remaining accessible to newer knitters.

What Is Being Made

This project produces a long, narrow scarf featuring a chevron design created through the strategic combination of different stitch patterns. The finished scarf is proportioned to drape elegantly around the neck while maintaining a consistent 10-inch width throughout its nearly 100-inch length. The chevron pattern creates visual movement and interest, making it suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The Chevron Scarf employs multiple stitch patterns arranged in charts to create the chevron effect. The pattern includes stitch charts labeled A, B, and C, with each chart representing a distinct stitch pattern section. One notable technique featured in the pattern is the M1R (Make One Right) increase, which is used to shape the scarf and create the chevron lines. A video tutorial link is provided within the pattern to guide knitters through this increase technique.

The pattern notes emphasize the importance of achieving proper stitch gauge, as different stitch patterns can produce varying fabric densities. The designer notes that Chart D, in particular, produces a tight fabric that may require going up two needle sizes to achieve the correct gauge. This flexibility allows knitters to customize their scarf by selecting which stitch patterns to include, enabling the creation of thinner variations or entirely different scarves using only desired stitch pattern sections.

Materials Required

Yarn: Cloudborn Fibers Superwash Merino Worsted Twist in color #14-005 Charcoal Heather. This yarn is worked at a DK weight (though the yarn itself is labeled Worsted Twist) and requires 4 skeins, with each skein containing 220 yards (201 meters) and weighing 3.5 ounces (100 grams).

Needles: US Size 7 (4.5mm) needles are used for this project, though the pattern notes indicate that needle size adjustments may be necessary depending on individual gauge and the specific stitch patterns being worked.

Gauge and Construction Notes

The pattern specifies a gauge of 21.5 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in each individual stitch pattern. Achieving accurate gauge is critical for this design to ensure the scarf maintains an even 10-inch width along its entire length. The designer's personal experience demonstrates that some stitch patterns, particularly Chart D, may require needle size adjustments to achieve proper gauge due to fabric tightness variations.

The inclusion of individual stitch repeats for each pattern section provides knitters with creative flexibility. Rather than being locked into a single design, crafters can mix and match stitch patterns or create multiple versions of the scarf with different combinations, making this pattern a versatile foundation for numerous chevron scarf variations.
