Product Description

This is a pattern for a Chevron Batwing Jumper, originally published in Knitting. It is designed for a 20 s themed issue. It is knitted sideways in stocking stitch and intarsia, with rib edges and a wide neck. The yarn has now been discontined. The baby version of the yarn knits to the same tension. Chevron Batwing Jumper by Sian Brown

What is Being Made

The Chevron Batwing Jumper is a knitted pullover sweater designed by independent designer Sian Brown. This intermediate-level garment features distinctive batwing sleeves with a chevron colorwork pattern. The jumper is available in four sizes to fit bust measurements ranging from 82-86 cm (32-34 inches) through to 112-117 cm (44-46 inches), with finished cuff-to-cuff measurements between 140-155 cm (55-70 inches) and lengths from 53-59 cm (21-23¼ inches).

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs several advanced techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The garment uses the intarsia method for working with multiple colors, which involves using small amounts of yarn for each color section and twisting yarn at the back to prevent holes from forming. The batwing sleeve construction requires careful shaping with increases worked at both ends of right-side rows to create the characteristic wide, flowing silhouette, while decreases are worked at the beginning of both right-side and wrong-side rows for precise shaping. The pattern incorporates a chevron colorwork chart that is read from right to left to the center, then from left to right, requiring attention to chart reading direction. One yarn is worked double throughout for textural variation.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl stitch (p) – used in combination with knit for textural elements
  • Stocking stitch – the primary fabric structure, worked over 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10 x 10 cm square at tension
  • Increases and decreases – for batwing sleeve shaping

Materials and Tools

This project requires DK weight yarn in multiple colors. The main yarn is Sublime Cashmerino Silk DK in the colorway Tittlemouse (A), requiring 8-12 balls of 50g depending on size. Accent colors include one ball each of Seesaw (B), Pinkaboo (C), and Pansy (D), also in DK weight. Additional materials include one ball of Katia Gatsby in Silver (E), which is used double throughout the pattern, and one ball of Bergere de France Origin Soie Bijou (F) for further color variation. Knitting needles required are pairs of 3.25mm (US 3) and 4mm (US 6) needles for ribbing and main fabric respectively, plus 4mm (US 6) circular needles. A stitch holder completes the essential tools needed for this project.
