Product Description

Now available as an individual pattern OR as part of the "With A Splash Of" collection.

I wanted to include a very classic, simple pattern in the collection - for a bit of stockinette and to make a pattern that would adapt easily to more than one weight of yarn.

Cherry Soda/Orange Soda is that pattern. A great slouchy hat with a little lace detail, designed in either Worsted or Sport weight yarn. Easy to modify, easy to knit, and even easier to wear.

Have a little fun with color and make a few!

Colors: Worsted: in Cozy: Red Haven. Sport: in Primo: Sticky Toffee

A suggested substitute worsted weight yarn is shown below. Instructions are also included for the sport weight version.

Cherry Soda/Orange Soda Knit Hats by BabyCocktails

What Is Being Made

Cherry Soda/Orange Soda is a downloadable knitting pattern for fitted beanies designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails. The pattern offers two distinct yarn weight versions—a worsted weight option and a sport weight option—allowing knitters to choose based on their preferred yarn and desired finished fabric characteristics. Both versions create hats sized to fit head circumferences of 18 inches (small) or 20 inches (large), with a finished depth of 10 inches.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental hat-making techniques. The construction begins with ribbed cuffs worked in the round using circular needles, which creates stretch and helps the hat sit securely on the head. After the ribbed section is complete, knitters transition to stockinette stitch in the round for the main body of the hat. The pattern utilizes crown shaping decreases to taper the top of the hat and create a fitted finish. The pattern notes that modifications can be made in multiples of 5 stitches, though stitch counts must be adjusted prior to the crown shaping decreases. Finishing is accomplished with a darning needle to weave in ends.

Stitches and Stitch Markers

The primary stitches featured in this pattern are ribbing (likely knit and purl combinations to create vertical texture) and stockinette stitch (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side when working flat, or simply knit when working in the round). Eight stitch markers are required throughout the project to track pattern repeats and decreases, particularly during the crown shaping phase where decreases are worked at regular intervals.

Materials and Gauge Information

Worsted Weight Version: Requires 1 skein of Plucky Knitter Cozy yarn (approximately 150–175 yards), shown in the colorway Red Haven. Needles include US #6 (4mm) circulars for the ribbed cuff and US #7 (4.5mm) circulars and double-pointed needles for the main body and crown shaping. Gauge is 5 stitches and 7 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch on US #7 needles, and 6 stitches per 1 inch in ribbing on US #6 needles.

Sport Weight Version: Requires 1 skein of Plucky Knitter Primo Sport yarn (approximately 150–175 yards), shown in the colorway Sticky Toffee. Needles include US #3 (3.25mm) circulars for the ribbed cuff and US #4 (3.5mm) circulars and double-pointed needles for the main body and crown shaping. Gauge is 5.5 stitches and 8 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch on US #4 needles, and 6.5 stitches per 1 inch in ribbing on US #3 needles.

Both versions use 16-inch circular needles for the body and transition to double-pointed needles for the crown decreases when stitches become too few for circular needles. A darning needle is required for finishing and weaving in yarn ends.
