Product Description

Cast on and knit TeaCosyFolk's Chameleon Tea Cosy with this super 7 page knitting pattern.

The main part of the cosy is the chameleon's body, and the limbs, head and tail are knitted and sewn on.

The chameleon is stood there with one leg raised. Apparently they can stand still like this for hours at a time.

I love his eyes that can be looking in two different directions and I love his feet that look as if he is wearing oven mitts.

It's an easy to knit pattern and the detail is created by knitting in stripes. The tea cosy used Stylecraft Special DK throughout and for the main cosy the yarn is held double to make it thicker and add more insulation.

I love weird and wonderful, and you don't get much quirkier then a chameleon, so I wanted to design a fun and quirky chameleon tea cosy.

The chameleon tea cosy fits a medium sized teapot that covers a Teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups or 2 pints.

This product is the knitting pattern only to make your own chameleon tea cosy.

Chameleon Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern by TeaCosyFolk

What is Being Made

The Chameleon Tea Cosy is a knitted cover designed to fit a 2-pint teapot or teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups. This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer TeaCosyFolk creates a functional and decorative tea cosy using a combination of colorful DK-weight yarns to achieve a chameleon-inspired aesthetic.

Craft and Techniques

This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs several key techniques to construct the tea cosy. The pattern utilizes double thickness yarn for specific sections, where yarn balls are divided and knitted as a single strand to create added structure and durability. The main body begins with a cast-on foundation and incorporates ribbed stitch patterns to create elasticity and a fitted finish around the teapot.

Stitches Used

The Chameleon Tea Cosy features the following stitches:

  • Knit stitch (K) - the fundamental stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Purl stitch (P) - combined with knit stitches for textural variation
  • Rib stitch - created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a 1x1 pattern (*K1, P1*), which provides stretch and a classic finished appearance

Materials and Specifications

Knitting Needles:

  • 5.5mm needles (UK size 5 or US size 9) for casting on and initial construction
  • 4.00mm needles (UK size 8 or US size 6) for main fabric and tension work

Yarn: The pattern calls for Stylecraft Special DK yarn in multiple colors totaling approximately 98g:

  • 47g Stylecraft Special DK Grass Green
  • 21g Stylecraft Special DK Gingerbread
  • 15g Stylecraft Special DK Spice
  • 9g Stylecraft Special DK Cream
  • 6g Stylecraft Special DK Turquoise

Additional Notions:

  • Stitch holder for managing stitches during construction
  • One pair of 14mm black safety eyes for facial details
  • Stuffing material for shaping and structure

Tension: The pattern specifies 22 stitches and 28 rows measured over 10x10cm using 4.00mm needles with DK-weight yarn, and 14 stitches and 23 rows over 10x10cm for reference. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper fit on the teapot.

Pattern Construction

The main cosy body begins with casting on 28 stitches using double thickness Gingerbread yarn and 5.5mm needles. The foundation rows establish a 1x1 rib pattern that is repeated multiple times to create the elastic cuff. This structured approach ensures the tea cosy will maintain its shape and grip securely on the teapot spout and handle areas.
