Product Description
Retro and dramatic, pairing with your chunkiest jewellery is a must!
An intermediate pattern featuring cabling, knitting in the round and short rows.
Nothing new about this one! This vintage style, cropped, chunky cardi is made from yarn from my stash, the cabling technique from my copy of Reader’s Digest Guide to Needlework from the ‘70s, and buttons handed down from my Nana and Great Grandmother.
This cardi is knitted up holding 2 strands of DK together, the perfect opportunity for mixing and matching colours or use a single strand of chunky yarn.
Chain Cable Cardigan by Libbyknits
What Is Being Made
The Chain Cable Cardigan is a knitted cardigan sweater designed by independent designer Libbyknits. This garment is a wearable layering piece available in seven sizes ranging from XS to XXXL, with finished bust measurements from 98.5 cm to 159.5 cm. The cardigan features a structured silhouette with set-in sleeves and is designed as a versatile wardrobe staple suitable for intermediate-level knitters.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Chain Cable Cardigan employs classic cardigan construction techniques combined with decorative cable work. The pattern utilizes a cable chart as a central design element, creating the distinctive chain cable motif that gives the cardigan its name. The garment begins with a ribbed hem worked in single rib stitch (K1, P1), which provides elasticity and a finished edge. The body and sleeves are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters, with cable panels integrated into the overall design.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch foundation for this cardigan includes:
- Single Rib (K1, P1): Used for the hem ribbing, which is worked to a depth of 5 cm before transitioning to the main body pattern
- Cable Stitches: Featured prominently throughout the design as indicated by the cable chart provided in the pattern, creating the textured chain cable pattern
The cable work adds visual interest and dimension to the finished garment while maintaining an intermediate skill level.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Chain Cable Cardigan is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, specifically using Paintbox Yarns Simply DK. The pattern calls for 5mm needles and requires knitters to hold two strands of yarn together throughout construction. Each ball of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK contains 100 grams and yields 276 meters, allowing crafters to calculate yardage requirements based on their chosen size. The two-strand construction creates a slightly heavier fabric than standard DK weight, resulting in a more substantial and durable cardigan suitable for everyday wear.
Size Range and Finished Measurements
The pattern provides seven size options with the following finished bust measurements in centimeters:
- XS: 98.5 cm bust, 43.5 cm length, 53.5 cm sleeve length
- S: 108.5 cm bust, 44 cm length, 52.5 cm sleeve length
- M: 119 cm bust, 46 cm length, 50.5 cm sleeve length
- L: 129 cm bust, 47.5 cm length, 48.5 cm sleeve length
- XL: 139 cm bust, 48.5 cm length, 47.5 cm sleeve length
- XXL: 149.5 cm bust, 50 cm length, 46 cm sleeve length
