Product Description
This gift card holder is a great way to dress up a last minute present. It can also double as a Christmas ornament.
Working seamlessly from top down, you begin with Judy’s Magic Cast-On, working in the half-round on magic loop, transitioning to flat knitting, and then joining work to knit in the round. The pocket is knit on DPNs and attached during the body construction, and raglan sleeves are picked up and worked down after the body and pocket have been completed.
Instructions for Judy's Magic Cast On can be found at www.knitty.com.
Gauge is intentionally tighter (more stitches and rows per inch) than normal to ensure durability.
Matching gauge is only important if you want to use this as a gift card holder. If you just want a cute ornament, you can use any yarn with needles that suit.
The pattern is written to require minimal printing. There is a second part - construction overview - with pictures that show different stages as you knit.
Certifiable: Gift Card Holder & Ornament by Pixisis (TwitchyKnitter)
What Is Being Made
Certifiable is a miniature knitted hoodie designed to function as both a decorative gift card holder and a small ornament. This quick-to-knit project is ideal for last-minute gifting or for dressing up a gift card presentation. The finished piece showcases a charming hoodie silhouette that can be displayed as a festive decoration or functional accessory for holding a gift card.
Project Overview & Construction Method
This pattern employs a seamless, top-down construction approach that combines multiple knitting techniques in a single project. The garment begins with Judy's Magic Cast-On, a technique that creates a provisional cast-on ideal for working in the round from the very beginning. The knitter starts by working in the half-round using the magic loop method on circular needles, which allows for working small circumferences without the need for multiple double-pointed needles initially.
As the project progresses, the construction transitions from magic loop to flat knitting, accommodating the changing dimensions of the garment. The work then joins to resume knitting in the round, creating a seamless fabric without side seams. This hybrid approach demonstrates intermediate-level construction skills and provides an engaging knitting experience with varied techniques.
Pocket & Sleeve Construction
The pattern incorporates a functional pocket that is knit separately on double-pointed needles (DPNs) and strategically attached during the body construction phase. This modular approach allows the knitter to complete the pocket independently before integrating it into the main garment piece.
The hoodie features raglan sleeves, a classic garment shaping technique where the sleeves are picked up from the body after the main piece is complete and worked downward to the cuff. This method creates clean, integrated sleeve caps and is a hallmark of seamless garment design.
Stitches & Techniques Used
- Judy's Magic Cast-On: A provisional cast-on method that creates two live edges simultaneously, perfect for seamless in-the-round knitting from the start
- Knit (k): The fundamental knit stitch forming the primary fabric
- Knit 2 Together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Knit in Front and Back (kfb): An increase that creates an extra stitch by working into both the front and back of a single stitch
- Make One Left (m1l): A directional increase worked by lifting the strand between stitches with the left needle and knitting through the back loop, creating a left-leaning increase
- Magic Loop Method: A circular knitting technique using a single long circular needle to work small circumferences
- Flat Knitting: Working back and forth in rows rather than in the round
- Knitting in the Round: Circular knitting that creates seamless tubular fabric
- Raglan Shaping: A sleeve cap construction where stitches are increased along diagonal lines from the armhole to the neckline
Materials Required
This compact project requires minimal yardage, making it an excellent stash-busting opportunity. The pattern calls for approximately 40 yards of worsted weight yarn, with the sample shown knit in Malabrigo Rios, a popular choice for its vibrant colors and soft merino wool fiber.
The needle requirements include a 32-inch circular needle for the magic loop technique and a set of double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the pocket construction. The pattern specifies 3.25 mm (US 3) needles or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge for the chosen yarn.
Additional notions include 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction points, and scrap yarn or narrow ribbon for securing stitches or adding decorative details.
Difficulty Level
Certifiable is rated as an intermediate difficulty project. While the individual stitches are fundamental, the combination of multiple construction methods—including provisional cast-ons, magic loop technique, transitions between flat and circular knitting, and raglan shaping—requires solid foundational knitting skills and comfort with pattern reading.
