Century and Light Socks by Corrine Walcher

Project Overview

Century and Light socks are a knitted sock design featuring a striking mirrored cable pattern that runs down the front of each sock. This intermediate-level knitting project offers an excellent introduction to cable work for adventurous beginners while remaining engaging for accomplished knitters seeking to refine their cable techniques. The design balances visual complexity with approachable construction, making it suitable for knitters expanding their skill set into decorative stitch work.

Finished Specifications

Century and Light socks are available in three sizes:

  • Size S: 7 inches around (unstretched)
  • Size M: 8 inches around (unstretched)
  • Size L: 9 inches around (unstretched)

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques essential for sock construction and cable detailing:

  • Cable knitting: The defining feature of Century and Light is the mirrored cable running down the front of the socks, requiring knitters to cross stitches over one another to create the characteristic twisted rope texture
  • Knitting in the round: Socks are constructed circularly to create seamless tubes, a standard approach in sock knitting
  • Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the sock body, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Stitch manipulation techniques: The pattern incorporates slip stitches, purl stitches, and decreases (SSK and purl two together) for shaping and stitch management

Stitches and Abbreviations

Century and Light uses standard knitting abbreviations and stitch techniques, including:

  • K (Knit) and P (Purl) stitches for basic fabric construction
  • Sl (Slip as if to purl with yarn in back) for cable setup and stitch manipulation
  • PM (Place marker) and SM (Slip marker) for tracking pattern sections and repeats
  • P2tog (Purl two together) for decreasing
  • SSK (Slip, slip, knit) for left-leaning decreases

Yarn and Materials

The sample socks were knitted using Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Sock, a 100% superwash merino yarn in the colorway Logan Circle. This yarn is supplied at 400 yards per 4 ounces, providing ample yardage for a complete pair of socks. The superwash treatment makes these socks practical for regular washing and wearing.

Century and Light accommodates both 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, allowing knitters flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the integrity of the cable pattern and overall design.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern calls for size 2 US (2.75 mm) needles, with flexibility in needle style. Knitters may choose either a set of 5 double-pointed needles or two circular needles, depending on personal preference and comfort with different sock knitting methods.

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch, knit in the round. Since each knitter's tension varies, swatching and adjusting needle size as needed ensures the finished socks will fit as intended.
