When I really got into the swing of knitting, I was living in Northern Virginia and Fibre Space was my LYS. Located in Old Town Alexandria, it still makes a great day trip from my current location—a little lunch, a little playtime along the banks of the Potomac, and then a little yarn shopping. It was on just such a trip last autumn that I encountered a stunning combination of yarns in shades of brown and blue that I immediately decided had to be made into a shawl. Not a wispy, lacy shawl, but something sturdy and cozy—something you might see Claire wearing as she traipses through the Scottish highlands or North Carolina back country on Outlander. Bit of brioche notwithstanding—perhaps a bit too precious for a truly utilitarian accessory—Cautious Tones is the end result of that endeavor. It’s a thick, warm layer full of texture, perfect to fend off the chill of the mistiest moors or iciest mountains.
