Product Description
Caumsett is my favorite kind of sweater – a comfortable classic pullover, oversized with an offset cable up the front and back, side vents and a cozy turtleneck.
The cable pattern is both written and charted.
It is recommended to have various lengths of circular needles on hand to accommodate changing numbers of stitches. For the sleeves and turtleneck, any method of working in the round (double-pointed needles, two circulars or a long circular for magic loop) may be used.
NOTIONS • stitch markers (2) • cable needle • waste yarn or spare US 6 / 4mm circular needle • tapestry needle
SKILLS USED • knitting flat and in the round • decreasing • short rows • reading charts (optional) • picking up stitches
Caumsett Pullover Sweater by Joan Forgione
What is Being Made
Caumsett is a classic pullover sweater designed by Joan Forgione. This is an oversized, comfortable knit featuring a distinctive offset cable running up both the front and back of the garment. The design includes practical side vents and a cozy turtleneck collar, making it an ideal layering piece for cooler weather. The sweater is available in seven sizes, ranging from 37½ inches to 62 inches in bust measurement, with the sample shown measuring 42½ inches and worn with 6½ inches of positive ease for a relaxed, comfortable fit.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
Caumsett employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create its structure and visual interest. The sweater is constructed using Stockinette stitch as the primary fabric, which creates a smooth, classic knit surface. Cable stitch patterns are incorporated as a decorative and textural element running vertically up the front and back of the sweater. The 4x3 Rib stitch is used for the turtleneck and likely the cuffs and hem, providing elasticity and a neat, finished appearance. The offset cable placement adds visual dimension while maintaining the sweater's wearable, everyday aesthetic. Side vents are worked into the construction, allowing for improved mobility and a more refined silhouette.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch for the body, creating a smooth, flat fabric
- Cable Stitch Pattern: Featured as an offset cable running up the front and back
- 4x3 Rib: Used for the turtleneck and ribbed edgings
Gauge and Needle Requirements
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The pattern specifies three different gauges depending on the stitch being worked:
- 17 stitches and 29 rows per 4 inches over Stockinette stitch using US 8 [4mm] needles, blocked
- 19 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches over 4x3 Rib using US 6 [4mm] needles, blocked
- 24 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches over cable pattern using US 8 [4mm] needles, blocked
Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to achieve the specified gauge, as this directly impacts the final garment dimensions.
Yarn and Materials
Caumsett is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits at a comfortable pace and creates a durable, warm fabric suitable for everyday wear. The pattern requires 8 to 11 skeins of yarn depending on the size being knitted, with larger sizes requiring more yardage. The use of worsted weight yarn contributes to the sweater's cozy, substantial feel while remaining accessible for beginner-level knitters.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle their first cable sweater. While cables may seem intimidating, the offset cable design and straightforward construction make Caumsett an approachable introduction to cable knitting. The combination of Stockinette stitch, ribbing, and cable work provides valuable practice in fundamental knitting techniques without overwhelming complexity.
