Product Description
Castle Beach Spa Cloth is the second in the Folk Tales Spa Cloth Collection. Like the Fairy Godmother’s Spa Cloth, it is knit sideways, using pima cotton to create a soft, luxurious and pampering facial cloth. The fabric looks lovely on either side.
Approximate size is 8 by 8 1/2 inches but may be easily modified.
If substituting yarns, consider using the largest size needle called for on the ball band.
Test knitted and tech edited.

What is Being Made
The Castle Beach Spa Cloth is a luxurious facial cloth and spa accessory, part of the Folk Tales Spa Cloth Collection. This knitted dishcloth measures approximately 8 x 8 ½ inches [20.3 x 21.6 cm], making it an ideal size for gentle facial cleansing, makeup removal, or spa use. The cloth is designed to be soft, pampering, and perfect for skincare routines.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This spa cloth is knit sideways, a construction method that creates interesting directional flow and allows for creative shaping. The sideways knitting technique involves casting on stitches along one edge and working the cloth horizontally until reaching the desired width, then binding off. This approach is particularly useful for creating rectangular garments with specific dimensions and can make pattern integration more intuitive.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The Castle Beach Spa Cloth incorporates several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters:
- Yarn overs — These create decorative openings in the fabric and are essential for the lace pattern featured in this design. Yarn overs add visual interest and contribute to the cloth's delicate appearance.
- K2tog decreases — Knit two stitches together to decrease stitch count and shape the fabric. This decrease method is a foundational technique in knitting.
- Slipping stitches — Moving stitches from one needle to another without working them, often used for edge definition or pattern work.
- Garter stitch — The gauge is measured in garter stitch (knit every row), which creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges.
Yarn and Materials
The Castle Beach Spa Cloth calls for 1 skein of Cascade Yarns Ultra Pima Fine, a sport weight yarn (5 ply) composed of 100% Pima Cotton. This yarn provides 136.7 yards per 50 grams, offering excellent yardage for a small project. Pima cotton is prized for its softness, durability, and luxurious feel against the skin, making it ideal for spa cloths and facial use. The yarn is worked in the Aqua colorway for this design.
Needles and Gauge
This pattern requires US size 4 [3.5 mm] needles, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. The target gauge is 22 stitches and 44 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in garter stitch. The pattern notes that gauge is not critically important for this project, allowing for some flexibility. However, needle selection significantly impacts the appearance of the lace pattern — the correct needle size allows the lace to be open enough to display clearly without losing definition. If substituting yarn, the pattern recommends trying the largest needle size listed on the ball band or even one size larger, with experimentation to achieve the desired look.
Skill Level and Pattern Notes
The Castle Beach Spa Cloth is classified as a beginner-level project, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft while still offering the satisfaction of creating a beautiful, functional item. The pattern is straightforward enough for those learning fundamental techniques like yarn overs and decreases. Optional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, though they are not essential to completing the project.
