Product Description

These socks are worked in the round from the top down. The cable design grows from the ribbing and continues down onto the front part of the leg before merging onto the top of the foot. The sock starts with a double rib that flows into the cable neatly, while the ribbing continues along the back of the leg into a slip stitch heel. The heel is turned and the gusset is shaped before the foot is completed in stocking stitch and the toe is grated together.

This pattern features in Issue 87 of Knit Now, which is on sale from 19th April in supermarkets, newsagents and craft stores across the UK. Find your nearest UK stockist here. Copies can also be ordered from MoreMags or if you prefer, digital editions are available via PocketMags.

Casta Socks by Ciara Ní Reachtnín

What is Being Made

Casta Socks are a pair of twisted cable socks designed by independent knitwear designer Ciara Ní Reachtnín. The name Casta is derived from the Irish word meaning "twisted" or "turned," reflecting the prominent cable design that characterizes these socks. Available in sizes XS through XL, these socks are crafted to be comfortable everyday wear, particularly suited for relaxing at home.

Construction Method

These socks are knit in the round from the top down, a popular technique that allows for seamless construction and easy customization of fit. The design begins with a double rib at the cuff, which transitions smoothly into the cable pattern. The twisted cable design originates from the ribbing and travels down the front of the leg before merging onto the top of the foot. While the cable pattern adorns the front and top of the foot, the back of the leg maintains continuous ribbing throughout. The heel is constructed using a slip stitch technique, which is then turned to create the heel cup. After shaping the gusset, the foot is completed in stocking stitch before the toe is finished using the grafting method, creating an invisible seam.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Double Rib: The cuff begins with a double rib, providing elasticity and a neat finished edge
  • Cable Stitches: Twisted cables form the primary decorative element, growing organically from the ribbing and continuing down the leg and foot
  • Ribbing: Maintains continuity along the back of the leg throughout the sock
  • Slip Stitch Heel: Creates a durable, reinforced heel using slip stitches for added wear resistance
  • Gusset Shaping: Decreases are worked to shape the gusset, ensuring proper fit around the foot
  • Stocking Stitch: The foot portion is worked in stocking stitch for comfort and a smooth surface
  • Grafting: The toe is closed using the grafting technique, also known as Kitchener stitch, for a seamless finish

Yarn and Materials

Casta Socks are designed to be knit in Aran weight yarn, though the pattern is also compatible with DK and Worsted weight yarns, allowing knitters flexibility in fiber choice. Aran weight is specifically recommended for these socks as it creates a comfy, cozy fabric ideal for loungewear and home comfort. The pattern requires circular needles or double-pointed needles appropriate to the yarn weight chosen, sized to achieve the specified gauge of 24 stitches by 30 rows over a 10 cm (4 inch) square.

Difficulty Level and Special Considerations

Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, Casta Socks require competency with knitting in the round, cable stitches, heel turning, gusset shaping, and grafting. A key technique note provided in the pattern addresses preventing ladders—gaps that can form after cable twists—by wrapping the yarn from bottom to top around the needle when purling the next stitch following a cable twist. Additionally, the pattern recommends blocking the socks gently to avoid overstretching and distorting the cable pattern, helping maintain the design's integrity and the socks' proper fit.
