Product Description
The idea for the Cartography pullover came from a desire to do something that was too much. It wasn’t just a yoke design, it was an EVERYTHING design. Stranded colour work from top to bottom!

Cartography Knit Sweater by Tin Can Knits
What Is Being Made
Cartography is a knitted sweater designed by Tin Can Knits, available in multiple sizes ranging from newborn through 4XL. This garment is crafted using the knitting technique and features stranded colorwork throughout, making it a visually striking piece suitable for various ages and body sizes.
Knitting Techniques Used
This sweater employs stranded colorwork as its primary decorative technique, which involves working with two colors of yarn simultaneously to create intricate patterned designs. The pattern accommodates different knitting preferences by offering flexibility in construction methods. Knitters can choose to work in the round using traditional circular needles and double-pointed needles (DPNs), or alternatively use the magic loop technique with a single long circular needle for seamless construction.
Stitches and Construction
The sweater is worked primarily in stockinette stitch as the base fabric, with stranded colorwork patterns integrated throughout the design. The pattern notes that the stranded colorwork fabric is less stretchy than regular stockinette, which affects fit and sizing considerations. Knitters will use standard knitting abbreviations and techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters.
Materials Required
- Yarn: DK weight yarn in quantities specified by size in the pattern's yardage table. The samples shown feature Brooklyn Tweed Arbor, with additional colorway options provided on the pattern's chart page.
- Needles: Two sizes are required to achieve proper gauge. Suggested sizes are US #3 / 3.25mm and US #6 / 4mm needles (or as needed to meet gauge). Needle requirements vary by size: infants and toddlers (0-6 months through 4 years) require 16" circular needles and DPNs in each size; children and adults (XS through 4XL) require 16" circulars, 32" circulars, and DPNs in each size. Alternatively, a single long circular needle can be used with the magic loop method.
- Notions: Stitch markers and a darning needle for finishing.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 26 rounds per 4 inches when working stranded colorwork using the larger needles. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The sizing table provides finished garment measurements, and the designer recommends choosing a size based on chest measurement plus desired ease. Because the stranded colorwork fabric has reduced stretch compared to regular stockinette, positive ease is advised to ensure the sweater does not stretch excessively during wear.
