What is Being Made
The Caroline Head Wrap is a beginner-friendly crochet headwear project designed by Pamela Dajczak. This head wrap is a circular band that sits around the head and is available in six sizes: Toddler, 3-5 years, 6-10 years, Adult Small, Adult Medium, and Adult Large. The finished head band width ranges from 3 inches for toddlers to 5 inches for adults, with circumferences varying from 17 inches for toddlers to 22 inches for adult large sizes. This versatile accessory is suitable for all ages and provides a comfortable, stretchy fit.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Caroline Head Wrap employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The pattern utilizes foundation single crochet (Fsc) as an alternative starting method, which creates the initial chain and first row of stitches simultaneously. The construction involves working in continuous rounds with back loops only (BLO) stitches throughout most of the project, which creates a textured ribbed appearance. The pattern uses slip stitches to join rounds and chain stitches to transition between rows. This technique-focused approach ensures that even novice crocheters can successfully complete the project.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch): The foundational stitch used to create the starting loop
- Single Crochet (sc): The primary stitch worked throughout the entire project
- Foundation Single Crochet (Fsc): An alternative method to begin the pattern, combining chain and single crochet into one step
- Back Loops Only (BLO): A variation technique where the hook enters only the back loop of each stitch, creating a distinctive ribbed texture
- Slip Stitch (slst): Used to join rounds and complete each circular row
Materials and Tools
The Caroline Head Wrap is worked using worsted weight yarn (also classified as #4 weight), which provides a medium thickness ideal for creating a structured yet flexible head wrap. The sample shown in the pattern was created using Lion Brand Heartland yarn. A size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook is required to achieve the correct gauge of 15 back loops only single crochet stitches equaling 4 inches. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, a measuring tape for checking sizing and gauge, and an optional stitch marker to help track the beginning of each round. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to print the pattern and reference it easily while working.
Difficulty Level
This project is classified as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet. The pattern uses only basic stitches and straightforward techniques, with clear sizing options and a simple gauge requirement. The repetitive nature of working single crochet in back loops only around in circles makes this an ideal project for building foundational crochet skills and confidence.
