Product Description

Carmen is the third shawl in my series of patterns inspired by glamorous Hollywood stars of the past. This stole is reminiscent of the lovely Rita Hayworth and her role in Carmen.

It features a wide rectangle shape made up of join-as-you-go motifs with a Spanish Flair. Depending on the yarn selected, Carmen is perfect for a special evening out or a day at the park.

The pattern calls for chains, single, double and treble crochet, clusters, and attaching new yarn. Written instructions, photos, and charts. Instructions are provided for three sizes, a wide 21 motif shawl (1100 yds), a 14 motif shawl (800 yds), and a 7 motif scarf (500 yds.). Details are included for joining the motifs, and there is no sewing involved.

MaterialsYarn: Any fingering weight yarn that blocks well. The mesh fabric of this design is very stretchy and requires blocking to open the stitches. Intermediate - - - US terminology

Carmen Crochet Shawl by Nancy L Drew

What Is Being Made

Carmen is an elegant crochet shawl designed as part of a Hollywood-inspired collection. This intermediate-level pattern creates a glamorous stole reminiscent of classic Hollywood style, specifically inspired by Rita Hayworth's role in Carmen. The design features a wide rectangular shape constructed using join-as-you-go motifs with Spanish flair. The pattern offers versatility with three size options: a wide 21-motif shawl, a 14-motif shawl, and a 7-motif scarf, making it suitable for various occasions from special evening events to casual daytime wear.

Construction and Techniques

Carmen is built using the join-as-you-go method, which allows motifs to be connected as they are crocheted rather than requiring assembly afterward. This technique eliminates the need for sewing, streamlining the finishing process. The mesh fabric created by this pattern is notably stretchy and requires blocking to properly open and set the stitches, revealing the intended drape and structure of the finished piece.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches combined into more complex stitch patterns:

  • Chain stitches for foundation and structure
  • Single crochet for density and definition
  • Double crochet for medium drape and coverage
  • Treble crochet for openwork and lacy sections
  • Clusters for textured, dimensional elements
  • Attaching new yarn techniques for seamless color changes or yarn joins within the motif construction

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for fingering weight yarn in any fiber that blocks well. Fingering weight yarn creates the delicate, refined appearance appropriate for an elegant shawl while allowing the mesh structure to display properly after blocking.

Hook: A 3.5 mm (E) crochet hook is specified for this project, sized appropriately for fingering weight yarn to achieve the intended fabric density and drape.

Pattern Documentation

Carmen is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern that includes written instructions, step-by-step photographs, and stitch charts to support crocheters at the intermediate skill level through the construction process.
