Cardigan with Lacy Godets by Pat Menchini
Garment Overview
This is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan featuring decorative lacy godets as a design element. The cardigan is designed by independent designer Pat Menchini and is available as a downloadable PDF pattern. The garment offers five different size options to fit bust measurements ranging from 76-81 cm (30-32 inches) up to 117-122 cm (46-48 inches), with corresponding actual bust measurements of 86-130 cm (34-51½ inches).
Construction Techniques
This knitting project employs standard garment construction methods suitable for intermediate knitters. The cardigan features button closure with five buttons positioned along the front opening. The lacy godets are integrated into the garment design, adding visual interest and texture variation. The pattern requires working to specific tension measurements to ensure proper fit and drape, particularly important when incorporating lace elements that affect fabric behavior.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The primary stitch used throughout the cardigan is stocking stitch, which forms the base fabric. The tension is worked at 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) when measured over stocking stitch using 4 mm needles. The lacy godets introduce decorative lace stitchwork that contrasts with the solid stocking stitch sections. Proper tension is critical for this project, as variations will affect both the fit of the garment and the appearance of the lace elements.
