This knitting pattern from Sirdar (pattern number 7512) guides you through creating a classic cardigan worked in the luxuriously soft Sirdar Divine DK weight yarn. Described as an Easy Knit, this design is well-suited to confident beginners and intermediate knitters alike, making it an accessible project for anyone looking to knit a wearable, stylish layering piece. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, so you can get started right away.

Sizes and Fit

One of the standout features of this pattern is its inclusive size range, covering six sizes to fit bust measurements from 81/86 cm (32/34 in) through to 132/137 cm (52/54 in). The actual finished garment measurements range from 89 cm (35 in) to 141 cm (55½ in), providing a comfortable, relaxed fit across all sizes. The full length, measured from the back of the neck, ranges from 54 cm (21¼ in) to 67 cm (26½ in) depending on the size chosen. The sleeve length is listed as adjustable, with a guide length of approximately 46–48 cm (18–19 in), giving knitters the flexibility to customise the fit to their own arm length.

What You Are Making

The finished project is a cardigan — a timeless, open-fronted knitted garment with sleeves. Cardigans of this style are typically constructed in separate pieces (a back, two fronts, and two sleeves) that are then seamed together and finished with a button band or border. This pattern uses 1 button as a fastening detail, suggesting a minimal, elegant closure rather than a full button band, lending the design a contemporary, relaxed aesthetic ideal for everyday wear.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Flat knitting worked back and forth on straight needles, producing separate garment pieces that are later seamed
  • Tension/gauge swatching — the pattern strongly emphasises checking tension before beginning, a fundamental technique for achieving the correct finished measurements
  • Shaping — typical cardigan construction involves increases and decreases to shape the armholes, neckline, and sleeve head
  • Seaming — joining the knitted pieces together using mattress stitch or a preferred seaming method to assemble the finished garment
  • Sleeve length adjustment — the pattern allows knitters to personalise the sleeve length, a useful practical technique for a custom fit

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) — the primary stitch pattern used throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric. The tension specification of 17 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 in) over stocking stitch confirms this as the main fabric stitch.
  • Rib stitch — commonly used in cardigan patterns of this type for welts, cuffs, and neckbands to provide stretch and a neat, professional finish (typical for garments worked with both 4mm and 5mm needles as specified here)

Materials Required

The pattern calls for Sirdar Divine DK yarn in shade 060 (colourway reference F068). The quantity required ranges from 5 to 9 balls of 50g depending on the size being knitted, based on average yarn requirements at the specified tension. Sirdar Divine is a popular DK weight yarn known for its soft, cosy handle, making it a pleasure to knit with and comfortable to wear against the skin.

You will also need:

  • One pair of 5mm knitting needles (UK size 6 / USA size 8) — used for the main body fabric
  • One pair of 4mm knitting needles (UK size 8 / USA size 6) — used for ribbed edgings and borders
  • 1 button — for the cardigan fastening

Knitting Patterns galore

I am knitting this at the moment. Wool recommended is no longer available, but Sirdar patterns adapt very well with alternate wool.
