The Cardigan
The cardigan is a classic baby button-up design with set-in or shaped sleeves, ribbed welts, and a neat, structured finish appropriate for both everyday wear and special occasions. It is constructed in separate pieces — back, two fronts, and sleeves — which are then sewn together, a traditional construction method that gives a clean, professional result.
Techniques Used
- Stocking stitch (st st) forms the main body fabric, created by alternating one knit row and one purl row, producing a smooth right side and a textured wrong side.
- Garter stitch (g st) — every row knitted — is used for borders and edging details, adding a simple ridged texture that lies flat without curling.
- 2x2 rib (K2, P2 ribbing) is worked on selected sizes for the welts and cuffs, providing elasticity and a snug, neat finish at the lower edges and sleeve ends.
- Cable needle techniques are incorporated into the design, adding a decorative cable or textured panel detail that elevates the cardigan beyond a plain stocking stitch garment.
- Increasing is worked by knitting into the front and back of a stitch (inc), used to shape the sleeves and body.
- Decreasing (dec) is used for armhole and neckline shaping.
- Yarn over needle (yon) creates decorative eyelet details, likely used for a buttonhole band.
- Stitches are placed on a stitch holder to keep live stitches secure during neckband construction.
