Product Description
The Calma Sweater is a beautiful slouchy sweater which is cosy, flattering and textural. It looks great in one colour but also looks fabulous with variegated yarn or stripes. The crochet pattern includes lots of photos for more visual makers as well as pattern tester examples for inspiration and row by row instructions and stitch counts.
The sweater is worked from the bottom up and predominately uses double crochet stitches and cluster stitches which makes it suitable for crochet beginners and advanced crocheters too.
This sweater can be created with a choice of 4 different yarn types: DK, Worsted, Aran and Chunky making it perfect for any stash! The pattern includes gauges for all 4 yarn weights and is written step by step in American terminology (the crochet hook size needed will depend upon the weight of yarn you choose). It can be made with wool, acrylic, cotton or a blend of yarns to make a sweater perfect for any season.
Happy creating! Alex
Calma Sweater by Travelling Threads Crochet
What is Being Made
The Calma Sweater is a crochet sweater designed to create a slouchy, slinky silhouette. This garment is constructed with a distinctive design featuring a torso worked in the round, paired with separate back and front panels that are worked in rows. The sweater is available in five different sizes, offering versatility for various body measurements and fit preferences.
Construction Techniques
The Calma Sweater employs a mixed construction method that combines circular and flat crochet techniques. The torso and sleeves are worked in the round, which creates seamless, tubular sections. The back panel and two front panels are worked separately in rows, allowing the designer to create intentional arm holes and shaping. This combination of techniques results in a garment with both structural integrity and the desired slouchy aesthetic.
The pattern is written using American crochet terminology and is worked from the bottom up, a common approach that allows makers to try on the garment as it progresses and easily adjust length as needed.
Stitches Used
While the specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the construction relies on fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for creating fabric with a slinky drape and slouchy effect. The pattern requires makers to follow stitch counts across five different sizes, indicating the use of consistent stitch techniques throughout the design.
Yarn and Materials
The Calma Sweater pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility in material selection:
- DK weight yarn – produces the best slinky effect
- Worsted weight yarn – produces the best slinky effect
- Aran weight yarn – produces the best slinky effect
- Chunky weight yarn – produces a snugger fit with less slouch
The pattern emphasizes that DK, Worsted, and Aran weight yarns are recommended for achieving the intended slouchy, slinky appearance. Chunky weight yarn is possible but will result in a different aesthetic with a tighter, more fitted silhouette. Crochet hooks appropriate to the chosen yarn weight are required, with specific hook sizes referenced in the gauge section of the pattern.
Difficulty Level
The Calma Sweater is rated as an intermediate-level crochet project. This classification reflects the pattern's combination of techniques—working in the round, working in rows, and managing multiple panels—which requires prior crochet experience and comfort with pattern reading and basic shaping methods.
Pattern Details
The pattern includes detailed gauge information to ensure proper fit and the desired fabric characteristics. Makers are advised to check gauge carefully before beginning, as gauge directly affects the slouchy quality of the finished sweater. The pattern provides stitch counts for all five sizes, though some calculation may be required during the construction process. Detailed instructions and support are available from the designer, Travelling Threads Crochet, for any questions or difficulties encountered while making the sweater.
