What is Being Made

The Câlin Shawl is a subtly textured wrap designed to drape around your shoulders for warmth and comfort. Named after the French word for 'cuddle,' this intermediate-level knitting project features a distinctive 'hugs and kisses' cabled border that creates a warm embrace when worn. The finished shawl measures 64 cm (25 inches) in length at the centre and 140 cm (55 inches) in width along the upper edge, making it an ideal accessory for crisp winter days or cozy indoor moments.

Techniques Used

This shawl incorporates several key knitting techniques that contribute to its textured appearance and elegant drape. Cable work forms the foundation of the design, particularly in the signature border that gives the shawl its distinctive character. The pattern also employs increase techniques to shape the garment as it expands from the upper edge. These techniques are suitable for knitters with intermediate experience who are comfortable working with cables and shaping methods.

Stitches Used

The Câlin Shawl utilizes specialized cable stitches that create its signature textured effect:

• C4B (Cable 4 Back) – Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
• C4F (Cable 4 Front) – Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold at front of work, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
• M1L (Make One Left) – From the front, lift the loop between stitches with left needle, knit into back of loop
• M1R (Make One Right) – From the back, lift the loop between stitches with left needle, knit into front of loop

Materials

The Câlin Shawl is knitted in DK weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Artesano, a 100% alpaca yarn that provides exceptional softness and warmth. Each skein contains 100 meters (109 yards) and weighs 50 grams. The alpaca fiber creates a luxurious drape and gentle texture that enhances the subtle stitch definition of the cable work. The shawl is worked on needles appropriate for DK weight yarn, allowing for precise cable manipulation and even stitch definition throughout the project.
