Calcada Portuguesa

Everyone who has been in Portugal knows them: the Calçada Portuguese. The patterned mosaic pavements are still being laid today following a tradition that has been practised for centuries. This way of paving has rightly been added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. I converted three of the most famous designs into knitting patterns for cushion covers. First, the widely used Mar Lago, resembling waves. Plus, a graphic weave pattern of the Praça dos Restaurodores in the city centre of Lisbon and a floral pattern that can be found surrounding the monument in front of the station Cais do Sodre. Mercerised cotton in the two colours of the pavement granite and beige is a great choice to imitate the Calçada because the pavement also reflects the sunlight and glistens in the rain. I knitted two square and one rectangular sofa cushions. The pattern repeats can easily be used for any cushion size.
