Product Description

Cadence Capelet is a lacy cabled capelet. It is started from the neckband and worked flat, increasing evenly until the outer edge is reached. The capelet is framed by garter stitch and fastened using a hook and eye. There are seven identical cable panels and six identical lace panels.

The stitch patterns are charted only. The pattern contains two charts, one for the lace pattern and one for the cable pattern. The stitches used are k, p, k2tog, skp, sk2p, yo, M1L, M1R, M1p, 2/2 LC, 2/1 LPC and 2/1 RPC.

Additional materials needed: one set of a hook and eye, cable needle, tapestry needle, blocking pins.

The capelet can quite well be knitted using heavier yarn and bigger needles. The finished measurements will naturally then change. Please make sure you have excess yarn if you decide to knit the capelet with different yarn weight and/or needle size.

Cadence Capelet by Henna Markkanen

What is Being Made

The Cadence Capelet is a lacy cabled capelet designed by independent designer Henna Markkanen. This elegant garment is a shoulder-covering piece that combines decorative cable work with delicate lace panels. The capelet measures 17.5 inches (44 cm) in height at the center and features a neckband measuring 18 inches (45 cm) in length, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions.

Construction Method

The Cadence Capelet is worked flat, beginning at the neckband and progressing outward toward the outer edge. The design features even increases throughout the construction process, allowing the capelet to expand gradually from the fitted neckline to the fuller hem. The capelet is framed with garter stitch borders and is fastened securely using a hook and eye closure, providing both functionality and a refined finish.

Stitch Techniques and Pattern Structure

This advanced-level knitting pattern showcases sophisticated stitch work combining two primary design elements. The capelet features seven identical cable panels that provide structural interest and visual texture throughout the piece. These cable panels are interspersed with six identical lace panels, creating an elegant balance between solid cable work and openwork lace. The main fabric is worked in Stockinette stitch, which serves as the foundation for the pattern, while garter stitch frames the edges of the capelet for a polished appearance.

Yarn and Materials

The Cadence Capelet requires approximately 750 yards (690 meters) of fingering weight yarn. The pattern specifies Regia Extra Twist Merino yarn, which is a high-quality blend composed of 75% Merino wool and 25% Nylon. This fiber composition provides durability, elasticity, and the softness characteristic of Merino wool, with nylon adding strength and longevity to the finished garment. Each 50-gram ball yields approximately 230 yards (210 meters).

Tools and Notions Required

  • US 6 (4.0 mm) knitting needles
  • Cable needle for managing cable stitches
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming
  • Blocking pins for finishing and shaping
  • One set of hook and eye closures for fastening

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements. The capelet is designed as a single size with a finished height of 17.5 inches (44 cm) at the center back and an upper edge length of 18 inches (45 cm) at the neckband.
