Product Description

Cheer up your office space with a fun knitted Cactus Cushion and Pen Pot. Recycle empty jam jars to make the pot, and you could also use it as storage for your hooks and needles. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the cushion and pen pot are knitted in acrylic chunky yarns in the round in seed stitch. The cushion flower is a pompom made from i-cord worked on two DPNs. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, decreases, and seaming to finish.

Cactus Cushion and Pen Pot Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry

Project Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern by Amanda Berry presents a pair of charming cactus-themed home accessories: a soft cushion and a functional pen pot. Both pieces are designed as intermediate-level knitting projects suitable for crafters with some experience. The pattern combines practical storage with decorative appeal, making these items ideal for desk organization or decorative home accents.

What Is Being Made

  • Cactus Cushion: A three-dimensional stuffed cushion shaped like a cactus, designed to add a playful touch to seating areas or decorative displays
  • Cactus Pen Pot: A functional container for holding pens, pencils, and other desk supplies, also constructed in a cactus shape

Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. Construction utilizes magic loop or double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round, a common method for creating seamless cylindrical and three-dimensional shapes. The pattern includes i-cord construction, a technique for creating cord-like edging or decorative elements. Seaming with a darning needle is required to join sections and close openings, and stitch markers help track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases.

Stitches and Construction Methods

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern overview, the intermediate difficulty level suggests the use of standard knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques. The pattern incorporates i-cord work, which involves a specialized technique for creating decorative or functional cord elements. Stuffing techniques are employed to create the three-dimensional cushion form, with toy filling inserted before final closure.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Both projects are constructed using 100% acrylic chunky weight yarn (also referred to as bulky or 12 ply weight). The pattern recommends Cygnet Chunky yarn in specific colorways: Kiwi (green shade) and Sorbet (pink shade). Yardage requirements are two 100g skeins of green yarn for the cushion and one 100g skein of pink yarn for accent details. Acrylic yarn is chosen for its durability, easy care, and vibrant color retention, making these pieces practical for frequent use and handling.

Tools and Notions Required

  • Needles: 5.5mm (US 9) double-pointed needles (DPNs) or a 100cm circular needle for magic loop technique
  • Notions: A darning or tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends
  • Filling: A 250g bag of toy filling for stuffing the cushion
  • Stitch Marker: For tracking stitches during circular knitting
  • Additional Materials: A jam jar to serve as the internal structure for the pen pot, and a 10cm x 10cm square of cardboard for creating the base of the large i-cord

Skill Level and Suitability

Rated as an intermediate project, this pattern is best suited for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and have experience with circular knitting techniques. The combination of magic loop or DPN work, seaming, and three-dimensional shaping requires confidence with these foundational methods. Crafters new to these techniques may benefit from additional resources or practice before attempting this pattern.
