Cabled Headband by knot•sew•cute
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern creates a stylish cabled headband designed for intermediate-level crocheters. The finished headband measures approximately 10 cm (4 inches) wide and 45.7 cm (18 inches) in circumference, stretching to fit head sizes between 53 to 56 cm (21 to 22 inches) in circumference, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various head sizes.
What Is Being Made
The Cabled Headband is a wearable accessory featuring textured cable stitches created through post stitches. This design combines both aesthetic appeal and functional stretch, allowing the headband to conform comfortably to the wearer's head while maintaining its structured appearance.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern uses Berroco Vintage yarn, an aran-weight yarn supplied in 100 g (3.5 oz) skeins containing 200 meters (217 yards) per skein. The project requires ¾ skein of Berroco Vintage or a comparable aran-weight yarn. The sample shown is worked in the colorway Petals (51168). Additional materials include a 4.00 mm (G) crochet hook (or the size needed to obtain proper gauge) and a yarn needle for finishing.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level pattern employs several fundamental and post-based crochet techniques to create its distinctive cabled texture:
- Chain (ch) – Used to create the foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc) – A basic stitch that provides structure and density to the fabric
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – Creates a medium-height stitch for building the headband structure
- Double Crochet (dc) – Adds height and drape to the design
- Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) – Worked by inserting the hook from front to back around the post of the stitch, then completing the double crochet as normal. This stitch creates the forward-facing cable effect
- Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc) – Worked by inserting the hook from back to front around the post of the stitch, then completing the double crochet as normal. This stitch creates the recessed cable effect
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds or move the yarn to the next position without adding height
- Yarn Over (YO) – The fundamental action of wrapping yarn around the hook to create loops
The cable effect is achieved through the strategic use of front post and back post double crochets, which work around the posts of previous stitches rather than into the tops of stitches. This technique creates a three-dimensional texture that visually resembles knitted cables.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 single crochets and 10 rows measuring 5 cm (2 inches) when worked with a 4.00 mm (G) crochet hook in an unblocked square. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished dimensions and ensuring the headband stretches appropriately to fit the intended head circumference range.
