Product Description
This pattern is written in the round. This is an advanced beginner pattern, but you must know how to knit in the round and cast onto circular needles. This does have some cable work, but I provide a video link to You Tube to show you how I do it.
This is an adventurous beginner pattern skill level:
---(5mm, 6 mm) double point knitting needles for size changes
---Cat 4 worsted weight (1 skein- 220 yards) I used Malabrigo worsted merino yarn
---stitch markers --
-cable needle or something to slide stitches to the back
Cable Lace Gloves Knitting Pattern by Made By Lilian
What is Being Made
The Cable Lace Gloves are a pair of hand-covering accessories created through knitting. These gloves feature an elegant combination of cable and lace stitch patterns, finished to a length of 9-10 inches. The pattern is designed in three sizes—Small, Medium, and Large—making it accessible for various hand dimensions. This beginner-friendly project produces a complete pair of gloves using worsted weight yarn, with enough yardage left over from a single skein.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Cable Lace Gloves employ several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners looking to expand their skill set. The pattern incorporates cable work, which adds textural depth and visual interest to the finished garment. Lace stitching is integrated throughout the design, creating an openwork effect that balances the density of the cables. Decreasing techniques are used to shape the gloves to fit the hand properly, while yarn overs create the delicate lace elements characteristic of this design.
Stitches and Special Techniques
The Cable Lace Gloves pattern uses the following stitches and abbreviations:
- Knit (k) - The fundamental knit stitch forming the base of the fabric
- Purl (p) - Used to create texture and pattern variation
- Knit decrease (k2tog) - A right-leaning decrease that reduces stitch count for shaping
- Yarn Over (yo) - Creates the openwork characteristic of lace patterns
- SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit) - A left-leaning decrease worked by slipping 2 stitches knitwise to the right needle one at a time, returning them to the left needle in their new orientation, then knitting them together through the back loop
- ½ RC (Half Right Cable) - A cable technique worked by slipping 2 stitches to a cable needle and holding to the back, knitting 1 stitch from the left needle, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle
Materials Required
The Cable Lace Gloves pattern calls for specific needle sizes and yarn to achieve the intended finished product. Double-pointed needles or short circular needles are required, with sizing dependent on the glove size being made. Small sizes use 5mm and 6mm needles, Medium uses 6mm needles, and Large has a separate pattern also using 6mm needles. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitches throughout the pattern.
Worsted weight yarn is the specified yarn weight for this project. The pattern requires only 1 skein of worsted weight yarn, though you will use only a partial skein depending on total yardage. The designer tested this pattern with Malabrigo Roving Worsted (210 yards) and Cascade Superwash (220 yards), both of which produced successful gloves with leftover yarn. This modest yardage requirement makes the Cable Lace Gloves an economical project ideal for using up partial skeins from your stash.
Pattern Specifications
The Cable Lace Gloves pattern is worked to a finished length of 9-10 inches, providing adequate coverage for most hands. The gauge for this pattern is 18-20 stitches over 4 inches when worked in worsted weight yarn on the specified needles. Achieving the correct gauge is important for proper fit, though the pattern's three size options provide flexibility. A single stitch marker is needed to track pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds during construction.
Difficulty Level
Classified as a beginner project, the Cable Lace Gloves pattern is accessible to knitters new to cable and lace work. While the pattern introduces special stitches like SSK and cable techniques, these are fundamental skills that beginners can master with practice. The straightforward construction and clear stitch abbreviations make this an excellent project for building confidence in decorative knitting techniques.
