I was asked by a customer for a simple cable hoodie for her grandson. Nothing too bulky but able to keep him cosy on chilly summer days. This is what I came up with and she was delighted with it. As he's grown I've made every size for him and several for his cousins as well.
The cables are only on the front so a great starter knit if you're new to cabling. The smaller sizes have 2 cables each side and the larger 3 cables. I hope you enjoy making it.
The Cable Hoodie is a knitted cardigan designed for babies and toddlers, available in four sizes ranging from newborn to 2 years old. This garment features decorative cable stitch panels on the front and is fastened with buttons, making it a practical layering piece for infants and young children.
The Cable Hoodie is offered in the following sizes:
The front panel design varies by size: smaller sizes feature 2 cables on the front, while the largest size includes 3 cables on the front for added visual interest and texture.
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and decorative techniques. Ribbing is used to create the cuffs and waistband, providing stretch and structure. Stocking stitch forms the main fabric body, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance. Cable stitching is the signature technique, requiring the use of a cable needle to cross groups of stitches over one another, creating the distinctive twisted rope-like texture that defines this garment. Additional techniques include increases using the kfb (knit into front and back) method and M1p (make one purl) for shaping, and decreases for tailoring the fit. The pattern also incorporates working from both the right side and wrong side of the fabric.
The Cable Hoodie utilizes the following stitches and abbreviations:
The Cable Hoodie requires DK weight yarn in the following quantities depending on size:
Needles required include 3.25mm and 4mm needles for working the different sections of the garment. The ribbed cuffs and waistband are worked on the smaller 3.25mm needles, while the main body is knitted on 4mm needles to achieve the correct tension. Additional materials include a cable needle for executing the cable stitches, a stitch holder for temporarily securing stitches, and 5 buttons (consistent across all sizes) for fastening the cardigan.
Achieving the correct tension is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 centimeters when working in stocking stitch on 4mm needles. This gauge ensures that the finished garment will meet the intended measurements for each size.
The Cable Hoodie is constructed by knitting the back panel first, beginning with a cast-on of 50 to 66 stitches depending on size. The lower edge features ribbing worked over 8 rows using the 3.25mm needles, which is then increased evenly across a transition row before switching to 4mm needles. The main body is worked in stocking stitch until reaching the specified length for each size, with the back measuring between 23 and 35 centimeters from the cast-on edge depending
