Product Description
I’ve planted many flowers in my yard to attract butterflies (and bees and birds). The speckled yarn has all the colors of my favorite flowers.
This lacy sock pattern begins with a feminine picot hem. There are two stitch patterns on these socks -- a trellis pattern and butterflies. I designed these socks to be fraternal -- the trellis on the back & butterflies on the front of one sock and the reverse on the other sock just for fun.
Yardage approx. 360 (380, 400) yds This pattern has been professionally tech edited.
Butterfly Habitat Socks by Laura Fahlin Designs
Project Overview
Butterfly Habitat Socks are an intermediate-level knitted sock design created by Laura Fahlin Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for knitting a pair of fitted socks in three sizes, ranging from Small to Large, with circumferences of approximately 7.5 to 9 inches when unstretched. The design features decorative colorwork and shaping techniques suitable for knitters with some experience in sock construction.
What Is Being Made
These are calf-height socks designed to fit snugly around the foot and ankle. The pattern includes three size options to accommodate different foot measurements, making them versatile for various wearers. The socks are constructed from cuff to toe using circular knitting techniques, creating seamless garments that are comfortable and durable for everyday wear.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Approximately 360 to 400 yards (330 to 365 meters) of fingering weight sock yarn, depending on size. The pattern sample was created using Socks that Rock Lightweight in the colorway Black Dragon Wisteria, which provides 405 yards per 155 grams.
- Needles: US 1 (2.25mm) needles or the size required to achieve the specified gauge. Circular needles are recommended for knitting in the round.
- Notions: Stitch markers and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Butterfly Habitat Socks employ several fundamental sock-knitting techniques. The pattern begins with a picot hem, a decorative edge created using yarn overs and decreases that produces a delicate, finished appearance at the cuff. The picot hem is constructed by casting on stitches using the Long-Tail Cast-on method, then working a series of rounds that include a turning round with yarn overs and purl two together decreases, followed by ribbing to create the decorative fold.
The socks are knitted in the round using circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, comfortable fit. This method is standard for sock construction and allows for continuous colorwork and shaping throughout the leg and foot.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The primary stitch forming the main fabric of the socks in stockinette stitch.
- Purl (P): Used in the picot hem ribbing and turning rounds to create texture and structure.
- Yarn Over (YO): Creates decorative eyelets in the picot hem turning round, allowing the cuff to fold elegantly.
- Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the sock and create the picot hem detail.
- Purl Two Together (P2tog): A decrease used in the picot hem turning round to pair with yarn overs for balanced shaping.
- Slip Stitch (Sl1): Used for joining rounds and managing stitch placement.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches and 48 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit. The three available sizes are Small (60 cast-on stitches, 7.5 inches circumference), Medium (66 cast-on stitches, 8.25 inches circumference), and Large (72 cast-on stitches, 9 inches circumference).
Yarn Weight and Fiber Considerations
The pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, which is a lightweight yarn ideal for creating socks with excellent stitch definition and durability. The 4-ply yarn weight provides a good balance between softness and strength, making it suitable for socks that will withstand regular wear and washing. Fingering weight yarn allows for fine gauge knitting, resulting in socks with smooth texture and precise colorwork details.
Pattern Features
The Butterfly Habitat Socks pattern includes a decorative picot hem cuff that adds visual interest and a polished finish to the finished garment. The combination of stockinette stitch fabric with the textured picot edge creates a sophisticated design suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions. The pattern is presented in a clear, organized format with abbreviations and round-by-round instructions to guide knitters through the construction process
