Product Description
Busu is a quick little cowl worked in the round. Trimmed on top and bottom with a bit of lace the point in front is created by the use of short rows.
This cowl requires knowledge of very basic lace skills, working in the round and short rows. It is suitable for an adventurous beginner knitter looking to add some skills to their knitting repertoire or for any knitter wanting to knit a fun quick project.
This cowl uses just 50 grams of DK weight yarn for the main colour and 10 grams for the contrast - it would look equally lovely in one colour or a handspun yarn.

Busu Cowl by SashkaKnits
What Is Being Made
The Busu Cowl is a quick, versatile neckwear accessory designed by Sashka Macievich. This cowl features a distinctive asymmetrical construction with a pointed front detail and varying widths around the circumference. The finished cowl measures 22 inches in circumference with a 9-inch-wide front panel and a 4-inch-wide back panel, making it a statement piece that drapes elegantly around the neck.
Techniques Used
This advanced knitting pattern incorporates several intermediate to advanced techniques that make it suitable for adventurous knitters seeking to expand their skillset. The primary construction methods include:
- Knitting in the round: The cowl is worked circularly using circular needles, creating seamless construction
- Short rows: A key technique used to create the distinctive pointed front detail of the cowl, allowing for shaping without increases or decreases
- Lace work: Basic lace elements trim both the top and bottom edges, adding visual interest and a delicate finish to the piece
Stitches Used
The Busu Cowl is primarily worked in stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic fabric base. Lace stitches are incorporated into the edging details at the top and bottom of the cowl, creating a refined contrast against the stockinette body.
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for Madelinetosh Tosh DK, a 100% superwash merino wool yarn available in multiple colorways. The sample shown features Curiosity as the main color (MC) and Flashdance as the contrast color (CC). Yarn requirements are modest: 100 grams of main color (approximately 225 yards) and smaller quantities of contrast color for the lace details. Knitters will need US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needles measuring 16 inches long, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a yarn needle for finishing. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, though the pattern notes that gauge flexibility is possible with adjustments to yardage requirements.
