A cosy beanie hat to keep you warm on your wanderings, inspired by the fronds of New Zealand’s native ferns, such as the iconic ponga tree. The fern-frond stitch pattern is formed with simple lace increases and decreases, and both charted and written instructions are provided.
When knit in a possum-blend yarn, the Bushwalk Beanie is particularly lightweight, soft, and warm! One ball of Zealana Kauri yarn will be enough for a hat that weighs only 40 grams, and folds up easily to stash in your backpack.
Materials: One ball of Zealana Kauri 4ply, or 160 yards of fingering-weight yarn. I recommend a slightly fuzzy yarn such as a blend with possum or alpaca content, or a rustic-style wool yarn.
Sizing: To fit a medium or large adult woman’s head, with 22-24” circumference. Suggestions are included for resizing by adding or omitting pattern repeats.
The Bushwalk Beanie is a lightweight, cosy knitted hat designed to keep you warm during outdoor adventures. Inspired by the delicate fronds of New Zealand's native ferns, particularly the iconic ponga tree, this beanie combines practical warmth with nature-inspired aesthetic appeal. When crafted in possum-blend yarn, the finished hat weighs only 40 grams and folds compactly, making it ideal for stashing in a backpack during bushwalks and travel.
The Bushwalk Beanie is designed to fit a medium adult woman's head with a finished circumference of 21–23 inches (53–58 cm). The relaxed finished measurements after blocking are 19 inches (48 cm) in circumference and 8.25 inches (21 cm) in length. The pattern allows for circumference adjustments by casting on different multiples of 16 stitches.
This advanced knitting project employs several key techniques:
The Bushwalk Beanie features a fern-frond lace stitch pattern created through the strategic use of yarn overs (increases) and decreases. The pattern is worked in repeats of 16 stitches, allowing for easy customization of the hat's circumference. Both stitch charts and full written instructions are provided, giving knitters flexibility in how they prefer to follow the pattern.
The recommended yarn is Zealana Kauri Fingering, a premium blend consisting of 60% New Zealand merino, 30% possum, and 10% silk. One 40-gram ball provides 167 yards (153 meters) of fingering-weight yarn—sufficient to complete the hat. Alternatively, 160 yards (146 meters) of any fingering-weight yarn will work. The possum-blend composition delivers exceptional softness, lightweight warmth, and a luxurious feel. Knitters will need needles appropriate for fingering-weight yarn and the chosen cast-on and construction method (circular needles or double-pointed needles for knitting in the round).
This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the combination of techniques required: lace knitting with its increases and decreases, working in the round, and the optional tubular cast on. While the lace pattern itself uses simple techniques, the overall construction and the precision required for a well-finished hat make this project suitable for experienced knitters.
