Product Description
Crochet two different textured washcloths that use a variation of the single crochet to create a bumpy texture that is great for scrubbing. The same stitches are used; however, their placement differs between the two options.
The name Bumps on a log reflects the texture created when crocheting this dishcloth.
Tools and Materials:
5.00 mm [H-8] crochet hook – or appropriate hook for yarn weight used
tapestry needle and scissors
worsted or Aran cotton or other yarn suitable for dishcloths (sample used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in Emerald Isle) – sample of Dishcloth A used 26 g, and sample of Dishcloth B used 23 g
Sizes: One size (adjustable). Dishcloth A is 18 x 18 cm (approx. 7 x 7 inches), and Dishcloth B is 16 x 16 cm [approx. 6 ¼ x 6 ¼ in]. Width can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the number of starting chains. Length can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the number of pattern repeats (rows 3 and 4).
Bumps on a Log Crochet Dishcloths by Caylynn Creations
Project Overview
Bumps on a Log is a downloadable crochet pattern designed by Caylynn Creations that creates two different textured washcloths perfect for everyday kitchen use. These dishcloths feature a distinctive bumpy texture created through strategic stitch placement, making them ideal for scrubbing and cleaning tasks. The pattern gets its name from the textured appearance that resembles bumps on a log, achieved through creative variations of basic crochet stitches.
What You'll Create
This pattern yields two distinct dishcloth designs that showcase different approaches to creating texture. Both washcloths use the same fundamental stitches but vary their placement to produce unique surface textures. These are functional kitchen textiles suitable for washing dishes, wiping counters, and general household cleaning. The textured surface provides enhanced scrubbing power compared to smooth crochet fabrics.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Bumps on a Log pattern focuses on fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The primary stitch used throughout both designs is single crochet, a basic stitch that forms the foundation of these washcloths. The pattern also incorporates the extra extended single crochet (eesc) as a special stitch variation to create the bumpy texture.
The extra extended single crochet is executed by inserting the hook into the next stitch and pulling up a loop, then performing yarn over and pulling through the first loop on the hook twice, followed by a final yarn over and pulling through all remaining loops on the hook. This technique creates raised stitches that stand out from the fabric surface, producing the characteristic bumpy appearance.
Additional foundational stitches used in the pattern include chain stitches for starting and shaping, and slip stitches for joining rounds or finishing edges. The variation between the two dishcloth options lies in how these stitches are strategically placed rather than introducing entirely different stitch types, making this pattern ideal for crocheters building their fundamental skills.
Yarn and Materials
The Bumps on a Log pattern is designed to work with yarn in multiple weights, providing flexibility for different preferences and stash usage. Suitable yarn weights include DK weight, worsted weight, and aran weight, allowing crafters to choose based on desired finished size and fabric drape. The pattern calls for a 5.00 mm [H-8] crochet hook as the primary tool for construction.
Skill Level
This pattern is classified as beginner level, making it accessible to crocheters who are new to the craft or those looking to practice fundamental techniques. The reliance on single crochet and basic stitch placement makes it an excellent project for building confidence and understanding how stitch variation can dramatically change fabric texture without requiring advanced techniques.
Pattern Format
Bumps on a Log is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access to instructions and abbreviations. The pattern includes a comprehensive abbreviations section using US crochet terminology, special stitch definitions with detailed instructions, and a materials list to help crafters prepare before beginning their project.
