Bulky Scood - Scarf and Hood by Dana Kikic Nemmert

What is Being Made

The Bulky Scood is a versatile knitted accessory that combines a scarf and hood in one piece. This multi-functional headwear design allows the wearer to use it as either a standalone scarf or as a hood, making it a practical and creative addition to any wardrobe. The project is designed by Dana Kikic Nemmert and is part of the Boredom Kills Design collection.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using knitting as the primary craft. The Bulky Scood is classified as a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to those new to the craft while still producing a substantial and impressive finished piece. The straightforward construction and simple stitch patterns allow knitters of all experience levels to successfully complete this design.

Stitches Used

The Bulky Scood employs fundamental knitting stitches that form the foundation of the design:

  • Garter stitch - created by knitting on both the right side and wrong side of every row, producing a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges
  • Stockinette stitch - formed by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side, creating the classic smooth V-pattern texture

Additional abbreviations and techniques referenced in the pattern include cast on (co), bind off (bo), knit (k), purl (p), yarn over (yo), slip stitch (ss), and repeat instructions (rep). The pattern also utilizes standard notations such as right side (RS) and wrong side (WS) designations, as well as the technique of working with yarn in front (wyif).

Materials and Tools

The Bulky Scood requires approximately 160 meters of super bulky yarn. The pattern provides flexibility in yarn selection, with suggestions including Blue Sky Alpacas Bulky 4x, WATG Crazy Sexy Wool 2x, or WAK The Wool 2x. The original sample was created using Blue Sky Fibers Bulky yarn, which is composed of 50% alpaca and 50% wool in a 100-gram skein yielding 45 yards, shown in the Cayenne colorway (now discontinued, with Curry recommended as the closest available color).

Essential tools for this project include 15mm (US size 19) knitting needles, which accommodate the super chunky yarn weight and contribute to the quick, satisfying knitting experience. Additional supplies needed are a pin needle or scrap yarn for holding stitches, and a blunt-end tapestry needle (darning needle) for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the piece.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 7 stitches by 12 rows measuring 10 by 10 centimeters (4 by 4 inches) in garter stitch. This gauge measurement is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions and drape of the Bulky Scood, and knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches the pattern specifications.
