Product Description
I live at 42º North latitude and East of Lake Erie... winters are often snowy with gusts of frigid air. This hooded pullover was created with features to combat my local weather and is meant to be worn as a layering piece.
The neckline, body, and hem are loose and boxy to accommodate wearing the pullover on top of turtlenecks and, in extreme cases, another sweater. The sleeves are longish to pull hands up inside, yet the cuffs are snug to block wind. The hood is tapered at the neck so there isn't too much material if you like to cinch scarves around your neck – as I do. The hood is also on the long side to pull up over bulky winter hats. Hoodie should be an oversized fit for an XL/1X Woman.

Bulky Hoodie by Lori Cerny
What Is Being Made
The Bulky Hoodie is a hooded pullover sweater designed by Lori Cerny as a functional layering piece for cold winter weather. This knitted garment features a relaxed, oversized fit intended for XL/1X women and incorporates practical design elements suited to harsh northern climates with snow and wind. The hoodie is structured to be worn over turtlenecks and even additional sweaters while maintaining comfort and mobility.
Design Features and Construction
This pullover demonstrates thoughtful engineering for winter wear. The neckline, body, and hem are intentionally loose and boxy to allow layering flexibility without restriction. The sleeves are generously long to enable hands to be pulled up inside the cuffs for warmth, while the cuff construction remains snug to effectively block wind penetration. The hood is specifically tapered at the neck opening to prevent excess fabric bulk when wearing scarves, and extends long enough to accommodate bulky winter hats without compromising fit or comfort.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This beginner-friendly knitting project utilizes fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for working with bulky yarn. The pattern employs circular needles in multiple sizes to manage the various sections of the garment, allowing knitters to work in the round where appropriate. The construction method accommodates increasing stitch counts as needed, demonstrating basic shaping and stitch management principles essential to sweater construction.
