What is Being Made
Bugsy the Fly is a small knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This quick-to-knit project creates a finished fly measuring 7.5cm long, making it ideal as a key chain charm or Halloween decoration. The pattern uses minimal yarn, making it perfect for using up small amounts of leftover yarn from other projects.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project worked flat on single pointed needles rather than in the round. The pattern uses fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners, including basic casting on, working in stockinette stitch (also known as stocking stitch), decreasing stitches, and seaming pieces together to create the finished toy.
Casting on is done using a regular knitted cast on method unless otherwise specified in the pattern instructions. Stockinette stitch forms the main fabric of the fly, created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows to produce the characteristic smooth, V-patterned surface.
Seaming is accomplished using mattress stitch, a technique that creates nearly invisible seams and is ideal for joining pieces of knitted fabric together. The toy is then stuffed with toy filling or cotton wool to create dimension and shape.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k)
- Purl stitch
- Knit two stitches together (k2tog) for decreasing
- Stockinette stitch (knit and purl combination)
Materials and Needles
This pattern requires DK weight yarn in small quantities. Recommended needles are 2.75mm (US 2) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm. Additional notions include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming and a small handful of toy filling or cotton wool ball for stuffing.
The recommended tension is 7 stitches by 9 rows measured over 2.5cm by 2.5cm in stockinette stitch using 2.75mm needles. However, tension is not critical for this toy pattern.
Difficulty Level
Bugsy the Fly is rated as a beginner level pattern, making it an excellent introduction to toy knitting and basic garment construction techniques.
