Product Description
Bubble tea or boba is a fun drink that we often have. The bubble or boba are the tiny spheres at the bottom of the drink that are made of tapioca. My son and I love getting milk tea with bubbles.
This pattern is easy to make but takes some time to make the boba, it’s worth it though! I hope you enjoy it :)

What is Being Made
This is a crocheted amigurumi toy designed to resemble a bubble tea (boba tea) drink. The finished piece measures approximately 22cm tall by 9cm wide, making it a substantial decorative or play item. The design captures the essential elements of a bubble tea beverage, including the cup, lid, straw, and the characteristic tapioca pearls (boba) that settle at the bottom of the drink.
Techniques and Construction
The Bubble Tea Amigurumi uses fundamental amigurumi techniques to create a three-dimensional stuffed toy. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, meaning it requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and shaping methods. While the core construction is described as easy to make, the pattern notes that creating the individual boba (tapioca pearls) requires additional time and effort, though the designer emphasizes the result is worthwhile. The project involves working with multiple yarn colors to distinguish different components of the bubble tea structure.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes standard amigurumi stitches, though specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided content. Typical amigurumi construction involves single crochet worked in continuous rounds to form the main body pieces, with increases and decreases to shape the cup, lid, and straw components. The small boba pearls are likely created using similar techniques on a miniature scale.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for 100% cotton yarn in two different weights:
- Aran weight cotton for the primary components (cup, lid, and straw)
- DK weight cotton for finer details and the boba pearls
Recommended yarn brand: Paintbox Yarns Cotton, available in the following colors:
- Vanilla Cream (1 ball) for the cup/tea component
- Paper White (1 ball) for the lid
- Duck Egg Blue (1 ball) for the straw
Tools and notions required:
- Crochet hooks in 3.25mm and 2.25mm sizes (the larger hook for aran weight yarn, the smaller for DK weight details)
- Stitch marker to track round progression
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing for creating the three-dimensional form
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembling pieces
- Black thread for embroidering the smile detail
The use of cotton yarn provides a natural fiber option that is breathable and suitable for toys, while the two-weight system allows for both structural stability in the main body and fine detail work in the smaller boba elements.
