Product Description
Because of my all-time cold feet (yes, even in summer ;-)) I absolutely love slippers! I like to put them over my normal socks, that’s the coziest way for me. For this design I chose the top down method and knitted with DPNs. The pattern is written for a sport weight yarn so it is knitted really fast! I also worked with the following techniques: Twisted German Cast-On, German Short Rows and Three-Needle Bind-Off.
Bubble Slippers by Rina Lehmann
What Is Being Made
The Bubble Slippers are a cozy footwear design created by independent designer Rina Lehmann. These slippers are specifically engineered to be worn over normal socks, making them an ideal layering option for those who experience cold feet year-round. The design combines comfort with practicality, offering a quick-to-knit project suitable for keeping feet warm in any season.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques that add sophistication to a beginner-friendly project. The construction method is top-down, which allows knitters to try on the slippers as they progress and make adjustments before completing the project. The pattern incorporates three key advanced techniques:
- Twisted German Cast-On – A specialized cast-on method that creates a secure, elastic foundation ideal for garments that require flexibility and durability
- German Short Rows – A shaping technique used to create three-dimensional structure and custom fit without visible gaps or holes
- Three-Needle Bind-Off – A finishing method that joins two sets of live stitches together, creating a seamless, professional edge
Stitches and Construction Details
The Bubble Slippers are knitted using double-pointed needles (DPNs), which enable the seamless, in-the-round construction necessary for slipper construction. The top-down methodology combined with DPNs allows for continuous circular knitting, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, comfortable fit against the foot.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that allows the slippers to knit up remarkably fast despite their structured design. Sport weight yarn provides an ideal balance of warmth and breathability, making these slippers suitable for wearing over socks without creating excessive bulk. The use of sport weight yarn means this project can be completed relatively quickly compared to heavier yarn weights, making it an accessible option for knitters seeking a fast, satisfying project.
Difficulty Level
Although the Bubble Slippers incorporate advanced techniques like German Short Rows and the Twisted German Cast-On, the pattern is classified as beginner-friendly. This accessibility makes the design an excellent opportunity for newer knitters to expand their technical skills while working on a practical, wearable project with immediate gratification and real-world application.
