Product Description
Brighton Beach is a shallow shawlette with an edging of airy lace, resembling shells or foaming waves. It is worked top-down, casting on all the stitches needed for the width of the shawlette. As the work progresses, stitches are decreased on either side, shaping the shawlette and making it go faster for every row!
Using only one skein of a luxurious blend of alpaca, silk, and cashmere, it will be a joy to knit and wear on chilly summer evenings.

Brighton Beach Shawlette by Dieuwke Schack-Mulligen
What Is Being Made
Brighton Beach is a shallow shawlette featuring an elegant edging of airy lace that evokes the visual texture of shells or foaming waves. This is a refined accessory piece designed for layering on chilly summer evenings, combining sophisticated aesthetics with practical warmth. The shawlette is worked in a top-down construction method, making it an intuitive project for intermediate knitters.
Construction and Design Approach
The shawlette employs a top-down construction technique, beginning with a cast-on that establishes the full width needed for the finished piece. As knitting progresses, strategic decreases are worked on either side of the shawlette, simultaneously shaping the garment and accelerating the knitting process—each row requires fewer stitches than the previous one, making the project increasingly faster to complete. This thoughtful design approach ensures sustained engagement throughout the knitting experience.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern incorporates specialized decrease techniques to achieve its refined shaping:
- Decrease 2 Stitches: Slip purlwise with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, slip stitch back to left needle, then knit 2 together through the back loops, resulting in 1 stitch decreased. Alternatively, knit 1 stitch and pass the previous stitch over the newly worked stitch to decrease 2 stitches total.
- Decrease 3 Stitches: An advanced decrease technique included in the pattern abbreviations for more complex shaping areas.
- Lace Edging: Airy lace stitchwork forms the decorative border, creating the shell or wave-like visual effect that defines the shawlette's aesthetic character.
Yarn and Materials
Brighton Beach is designed to use a single skein of luxury yarn, making it an economical project despite its refined appearance. The recommended yarn is Walkcollection Luxe Fingering, a premium blend composed of 70% alpaca, 20% silk, and 10% cashmere, with a yardage of 437 yards per 100 grams. This luxurious fiber combination provides exceptional softness and drape, enhancing the shawlette's comfort and wearability.
The pattern accommodates yarn substitution with flexibility: any fingering or light fingering weight yarn that knits to the specified gauge may be used, allowing knitters to select alternative luxury blends or preferred colorways while maintaining the intended finished dimensions and fabric characteristics.
Needles and Gauge
The project requires 4 mm (US 6) circular needles measuring 80 cm (31 inches) in length. The longer circular needle is essential to accommodate the large number of stitches required at the cast-on stage before decreases begin reducing stitch count.
Gauge is noted as not crucial for this design, offering flexibility for knitters who may not achieve exact gauge matches. However, gauge may influence the final dimensions of the finished shawlette, so awareness of personal gauge is recommended for optimal results.
Yarn Specifications and Coloring
The featured colorway for this pattern is "Red Coral," a warm, vibrant hue that complements the delicate lace edging and shell-inspired design. The alpaca, silk, and cashmere blend creates a fabric with excellent drape and a subtle sheen, qualities that enhance the visual impact of lace patterning.
