BRIGHTLY Shawl by Myla Vayner
What is Being Made
The BRIGHTLY shawl is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Myla Vayner of Myla's Knit Corner. This is an intermediate-level triangular shawl available in three finished sizes: Small (42" x 19" wingspan x depth), Medium (57" x 25"), and Large (68" x 33"). The shawl is worked in DK weight yarn and features a stitch pattern that creates beautiful drape and stretch along the longest edge after blocking, making it an elegant accessory piece.
Techniques Used
This knitting pattern employs several key techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The primary construction method involves working with circular needles in the round or flat, depending on the knitter's preference. The pattern utilizes knit through back loop (k1TBL) stitches as a signature element, which creates twisted stitches that add texture and visual interest to the finished piece. Blocking is an essential finishing technique for this design, as the pattern stitch naturally stretches at the longest edge during the blocking process, creating the intended finished measurements and enhancing the shawl's drape.
Stitches Used
- Knot stitch – the primary stitch pattern that creates the textured fabric and characteristic stretch
- Knit 1 through back loop (k1TBL) – twisted stitches that add dimension to the design
- Cast on (CO) – foundation stitches to begin the shawl
- Bind off (BO) – finishing technique to secure the final edge
Materials and Gauge
The BRIGHTLY shawl is designed for DK weight yarn (also known as 8 Ply). The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Pandia's Jewels Dazzle DK, a premium blend containing 75% superwash merino, 20% nylon, and 5% Stellina for added sparkle and durability. Yardage requirements vary by size: Small requires 500 yards (450 meters), Medium requires 700 yards (640 meters), and Large requires 860 yards (786 meters).
Needles required include 32" circular needles in US size 7 (4.5 mm) and/or US size 8 (5.00 mm), or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge. The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches x 24 rows = 4" x 4" when measured in knot stitch using US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles before blocking. Additional materials needed include scissors, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and stitch markers as needed during construction.
