Bride and Groom Gnomes by Phoenixknits
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern from designer Phoenixknits creates a charming pair of decorative gnome dolls dressed as a bride and groom. The bride gnome stands 6 inches high while the groom gnome reaches 7 inches in height, making them a delightful pair for display or as a unique handmade gift. These are three-dimensional knitted dolls designed to capture the whimsical character of gnomes with wedding-themed styling.
Techniques Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for creating small, structured dolls. Key techniques include working with decreases to shape the gnome forms and increases to build volume where needed. The pattern specifically requires careful attention to the increase method used, as the designer notes that using the inc1 technique (knitting into the front and back of the same stitch) is essential for the stitch count to work out correctly throughout the project. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base for these gnomes.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – the fundamental knit stitch
- Purl (p) – the fundamental purl stitch
- Stockinette stitch (ss) – created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic knitted fabric
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) and Purl 2 together (p2tog) – decrease stitches that reduce stitch count by one
- Inc1 – increase method worked by knitting into both the front and back of the same stitch
- Yarn forward (YF) – wrapping the yarn around the needle clockwise to create yarn-over details
Materials
This pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as 8ply or worsted weight). The designer used an unbranded DK white and grey yarn that featured a glittery thread running through it for added sparkle and visual interest. However, the pattern is flexible regarding yarn choice – plain white and grey yarn work equally well, or crafters may substitute colors of their choice to personalize the bride and groom gnomes. Standard knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn are required, along with basic finishing supplies for assembling and stuffing the completed dolls.
