Product Description
The pattern in this sock reminds me of a Caisson breakwater. The water bounces off the linear structure, creating ripples off of each side. I used a simple, repetitive pattern to create the chevrons, which can be slightly snugger than plain stockinette. Adjust your needle size accordingly for greatest comfort.
NOTE The Breakwater stitch pattern does not have much give when worked around the entire calf. I recommend going up a needle size (or pattern size) if you have wide feet or ankles. You might also consider working the Breakwater stitch on just the front of the leg rather than all the way around for more ease.
Breakwater Socks by Julia Swart
What is Being Made
Breakwater is a knitted sock pattern designed by Julia Swart, available in three sizes: Women's Medium, Women's Large, and Men's Medium. The pattern features a distinctive chevron motif inspired by the linear structure of a Caisson breakwater, where water creates ripples bouncing off each side of the structure. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a pair of socks using the magic loop or double-pointed needle method.
Design and Stitch Techniques
The Breakwater pattern employs a simple, repetitive chevron stitch pattern to create visual interest reminiscent of water ripples. The designer notes that this chevron pattern can be slightly snugger than plain stockinette stitch, so knitters should consider adjusting needle size for optimal comfort and fit.
Key stitches and abbreviations used throughout the pattern include:
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches as foundational techniques
- Slip stitch (s1) worked knitwise
- Ssk (slip, slip, knit) for left-leaning decreases
- K2tog (knit two together) for right-leaning decreases
- Kfb (knit through front and back loops) for increases
- Judy's Magic Cast On for the toe construction
- Stockinette stitch as the primary base fabric
Materials and Gauge
The Breakwater socks are designed to be worked on US 2 (2.75mm) double-pointed needles. The pattern calls for approximately 400 yards of 4-ply sock yarn; the designer specifically used Blue Ridge Yarns Kaleidoscope Superwash Sock, though any compatible sock yarn will work for this project.
The recommended gauge is 33 stitches by 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished sock dimensions and ensuring the chevron pattern displays as intended.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginner level. Familiarity with techniques such as working in the round on double-pointed needles, executing decreases and increases, and understanding stitch abbreviations is expected.
