Product Description
I created this hat as a sort of challenge to myself. I purchased a skein of yarn I liked the color of, and then decided I was not going to allow it pool without at least making an attempt to change it up a bit. With crossed over stitches and texture, this is what I came up with.
This hat does have a slightly slouchy fit on people who don't have heads as large as mine.
The patterning continues into the decreases, and there are no charts at this point in time, so be careful when you reach the decreases. Because of these decreases, if you need a slightly larger or smaller hat, it would be better to try seeing how a change in gauge would work rather than trying to add or remove stitches.
Break It Up Knit Hat by Stephanie Waggoner
What Is Being Made
Break It Up is an adult-sized knit hat designed by Stephanie Waggoner. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished hat suitable for average adult head sizes, offering a classic headwear project that combines ribbed and textured stitch work.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project worked primarily in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles. Working in the round eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish typical of modern hat construction. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques including cast-on methods, ribbing, and decorative stitch patterns that build skills appropriate for intermediate-level knitters.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The Break It Up hat incorporates several essential knitting stitches and techniques:
- Knit (K) – The fundamental knit stitch that forms the base of most knitted fabric
- Purl (P) – The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create texture and visual interest
- Back Twist (BT) – A decorative twisted stitch created by knitting the second stitch on the left needle without dropping it, then knitting the first stitch, and dropping both stitches together. This creates a distinctive crossed or twisted appearance in the fabric
- Knit Two Together (k2tog) – A right-leaning decrease stitch used for shaping
- Purl Two Together (p2tog) – A decrease worked on the purl side
- 2x2 Ribbing ([k2, p2] around) – An alternating knit-purl pattern worked in two-stitch repeats that creates an elastic, stretchy fabric ideal for hat cuffs and edges
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Break It Up hat is designed to use approximately 1 ball of DK weight yarn. The pattern sample was knit in Malabrigo Yarn Silky Merino in the colorway Caribeno, though any DK weight yarn of similar characteristics will work. DK weight (also called light worsted or 3-ply) is a versatile yarn weight that produces fabric with good drape and definition, making it ideal for displaying stitch detail like the Back Twist.
Needles and Tools
Knitters have flexibility in needle choice for this project. The pattern calls for US size 6/4.0mm circular needles measuring at least 32 inches (81cm) long, which allows working the entire hat in the round without interruption. Alternatively, a 16-inch (41cm) circular needle paired with a set of double-pointed needles provides another method for working small circumferences in the round. Additional tools include a stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
Gauge and Pattern Specifications
The pattern gauge is measured as approximately 5 repeats of the stitch pattern equaling 3 inches (7.5cm). Achieving correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished hat size. The pattern begins with a long-tail cast on of 112 stitches, which are then joined to work in the round while taking care not to twist the stitches. The hat begins with 2x2 ribbing worked for 1 inch, which creates the stretchy cuff that helps the hat stay securely on the wearer's head.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques like casting on, knitting in the round, and simple decreases, but who are ready to tackle more decorative stitch work such as the Back Twist and pattern repeats that require attention to stitch placement and sequence.
