Branching Path Cowl by Janelle Martin
What is Being Made
The Branching Path Cowl is a neck wrap designed to be knit in the round using circular needles. This cowl features a finished circumference of 22 inches (55.88 cm) and a width of 10.5 inches (26.67 cm) when blocked. The design is worked with alpaca or alpaca/merino blend yarn in a chunky weight, creating a lush and comfortable garment perfect for wrapping around the neck.
Techniques Used
This cowl is worked in the round on circular needles, making it a seamless construction project. The pattern offers flexibility in construction methods, allowing knitters to work using traditional circular needles, double-pointed needles (dpns), or the magic loop technique. One of the key customizable features of this design is the ability to easily adjust the length of the cowl by adding or removing stitch repeats from the pattern chart, making it adaptable to individual preferences.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Branching Path Cowl features charted stitch work, with gauge measured over Chart A. The pattern uses a gauge of 16 stitches and 35 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) when measured over the charted pattern and blocked. The cowl is designed with a branching motif that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to knitters at the advanced beginner skill level.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern requires 109 yards (100 meters) of chunky weight yarn that knits to approximately 3.5–4 stitches per inch. The cowl shown was knit in Misti Alpaca 'Tonos Chunky' in the colorway Lord of the Reds, which is a 50% baby alpaca and 50% merino blend (3.53 oz/100 grams per skein).
Needles: One US #10.5/6.5 mm circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 cm) in length, or a size that achieves the specified gauge.
Additional Tools: The pattern recommends having 10 stitch markers on hand, with one marker in a contrasting color to mark the beginning of each round. Glow line tape is suggested for marking the current row on charts and instructions, and a tapestry needle is needed for finishing.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as Advanced Beginner, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knitting skills and are ready to work with charted patterns and in-the-round construction.
