Product Description
This oversized cardigan originally knitted in Twilleys Freedom Purity Chunky, shade 787 Limestone, features fairly simple textured stitch patterns, long sleeves, welt and rib front band. The body is worked in one piece to the armholes then divided for left & right fronts and back. The sleeves are knitted up from the cuff, have a shallow cap and are set in. Stitches are picked up along both front edges and back neck and the front band worked in rib.
As this garment is oversized, it is advisable check the final measurements to select your preferred fit.
The original yarn seems to be discontinued but suggestions for substitutes may be found at yarnsub or check with loveknitting for ideas, but do remember to knit a swatch.
Boyfriend Cardigan by Judy Furlong
What Is Being Made
The Boyfriend Cardigan is a textured oversized cardigan designed by Judy Furlong and originally published in GMC Knitting Magazine, Issue 98 (January 2012). This garment features a relaxed, boyfriend-style fit with long sleeves and is constructed in chunky yarn for a substantial, cozy finished piece. The pattern is available in multiple sizes ranging from 76 cm to 141 cm (approximately 30 to 56 inches) to accommodate various body measurements, with the finished garment intentionally oversized for a comfortable, layered aesthetic.
Construction Techniques
The Boyfriend Cardigan employs several key knitting techniques to create its structured yet comfortable silhouette:
- One-piece body construction: The body is knitted as a single piece from the bottom up to the armholes, then divided to create separate left front, right front, and back sections. This method minimizes seaming and creates a cohesive fabric.
- Set-in sleeves: The sleeves feature a shallow cap and are set into the armholes using traditional sleeve cap shaping, providing a fitted shoulder line while maintaining the oversized body proportions.
- Cuff-up sleeve construction: Sleeves are knitted from the cuff upward, allowing for consistent stitch definition along the entire sleeve length.
- Ribbed front band: Stitches are picked up along both front edges and the back neck, then worked in rib stitch to create a structured, finished edge that frames the cardigan opening.
- Welt and rib detailing: The cardigan incorporates a welt (a horizontal band of tighter stitching) and ribbed sections that add visual interest and help define the garment's edges.
Stitches Used
The Boyfriend Cardigan features fairly simple textured stitch patterns throughout the main body, creating visual depth and interest without requiring advanced stitch techniques. The textured stitches are balanced by rib stitch used for the front band, cuffs, and welt sections. This combination of textured and ribbed elements provides both aesthetic appeal and functional structure, with the ribbed sections helping the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Boyfriend Cardigan is designed for chunky weight yarn, which creates a quick-knitting garment with substantial drape and warmth. The original yarn used in the pattern has been discontinued; however, yarn substitutes can be found through resources such as www.yarnsub.com or local yarn shops. When substituting yarn, it is essential to knit a gauge swatch to ensure the final garment measurements and fabric characteristics match the designer's intent. The chunky yarn weight contributes to the cardigan's cozy, oversized aesthetic and relatively quick completion time compared to lighter yarn weights.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. While the textured stitch patterns are described as fairly simple, the intermediate rating accounts for skills such as working a garment in multiple pieces, managing set-in sleeves, picking up stitches along edges, and understanding how to adjust fit in an oversized garment. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions and making adjustments based on gauge and final measurements before beginning.
