Product Description
My parents belonged to a bowling league when I was growing up, and I loved going to the bowling alley with them. Dad’s league shirt was the inspiration for this retro-look polo for spring/summer dressy fun, which comes in children’s sizes 2-10. The shirt is worked seamlessly from the top down with seamless set-in sleeves, and hemmed bottom edge and sleeves for a tailored look.
Current version is VERSION 1, 3/13/2011.

Bowling Shirt Polo by Jen Johnson
Project Overview
The Bowling Shirt Polo is a retro-inspired children's knitting pattern designed by Jen Johnson of Magpie Knitter Designs. This garment captures the nostalgic charm of vintage bowling league apparel, reimagined as a spring and summer dressy piece for children. The pattern is available in sizes 2 through 10, making it suitable for a range of young wearers.
Construction Method
This polo shirt is constructed using a seamless, top-down knitting approach. The garment begins at the neckline and progresses downward toward the hem, eliminating the need for seaming the body pieces together. The sleeves are set in seamlessly as part of the continuous knitting process, rather than being knit separately and sewn on. This technique creates a smooth, professional finish with minimal seams.
Design Details
The Bowling Shirt Polo features several tailored finishing elements that enhance its polished appearance. The bottom edge of the garment and the sleeve cuffs are both hemmed, providing a refined, structured look appropriate for dressy occasions. The seamless set-in sleeves integrate smoothly into the body of the shirt, creating clean armhole lines.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works well for children's garments and provides good stitch definition. Knitters will need appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape.
Skill Level
The Bowling Shirt Polo is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern. Knitters should be comfortable with fundamental techniques and ready to tackle seamless construction methods, including top-down knitting and integrated sleeve shaping.
