Product Description

This pattern is part of the eBook “Berlin - wrapped in Red”, the result of a collaboration between Steffi Palm & Marion Bulin, owners of Yarn over Berlin, and their fabulous and creative friends. The eBook is part of the Malabrigo Freelance pattern project and features several Malabrigo yarns used for ten red patterns named after Berlin´s districts, rivers or sights.

Flowers and butterflies, two of my favorite things which are captured in the Botanischer Garten. This crescent shaped, lace shawl is knit top down with a flower and butterfly lace and cable border as well as a middle flower lace panel. The crescent shape stays nicely put and won’t slip of your shoulders. Inspired by the thought of keeping warm on a cool Berlin summer evening wrapped in flowers and butterflies, this delicate shawl came to be and will beautifully compliment any outfit throughout the year.

Yarn: MALABRIGO Silkpaca, 70% Baby Alpaca, 30% Silk, shown in colorway Fuchsia Gauge: 20 sts = 10cm

Botanischer Garten Lace Shawl by Kimberly Gintar

What is Being Made

The Botanischer Garten is a crescent-shaped lace shawl designed to drape elegantly across the shoulders without slipping. This intermediate-level knitting project features botanical motifs inspired by flowers and butterflies, capturing the essence of a Berlin summer garden. The finished shawl measures 34 inches (0.87 m) deep and 51 inches (1.30 m) wide, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering throughout the year.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This shawl is knit top-down, a construction method that allows knitters to try on the garment as it develops and easily adjust the final size by working additional rows before binding off. The top-down approach also provides flexibility for customizing the shawl's proportions to suit individual preferences.

The design incorporates multiple lace panels and decorative elements. A flower lace panel runs through the middle of the shawl, creating a focal point, while the border features both flower and butterfly lace motifs combined with cable stitches. This combination of delicate lace and textured cables adds visual interest and dimension to the finished piece.

Stitches Used

The shawl primarily employs lace stitches to create the intricate floral and butterfly patterns throughout the design. Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric, providing a smooth canvas that allows the lace motifs to stand out. Cable stitches are incorporated into the border, adding texture and structure to frame the delicate lace elements. The combination of these stitch types creates contrast between smooth, openwork sections and more densely textured areas.

Yarn Characteristics

The MALABRIGO Silkpaca blend combines the warmth and softness of baby alpaca with the lustrous sheen and drape of silk. This fiber composition creates a luxurious, lightweight fabric that is breathable yet insulating—ideal for a shawl designed to provide warmth during cool evenings. The silk content adds elegance and a subtle sheen that enhances the visibility of the lace and cable stitch patterns. The yarn's characteristics make it well-suited for displaying the intricate botanical motifs featured in this design.

Skill Level and Suitability

Classified as an intermediate knitting project, the Botanischer Garten requires familiarity with lace knitting techniques, cable stitches, and top-down construction methods. Knitters should be comfortable reading lace charts, managing multiple stitch markers, and understanding how to adjust tension to create even, open lacework. The project is suitable for experienced knitters looking to expand their skills with decorative shawl construction.
