Product Description
“All forests have their own personality…. A voice speaks up when you enter their acres that can’t be mistaken for one you’d hear anyplace else, a voice true to those particular tress, individual rather than of their species.” ― Charles de Lint, The Onion Girl
This is a pattern for a top down knit, with a circular yoke, and using the Fair-Isle colourwork technique. This sweater has a generous fit and may be worn with 4 - 12 in/10 - 30.5 cm positive ease.
This pattern may, also, be worked using the alternate sizing instruction for a more standard fit on a more traditional and general man shape. Please see schematic (included in the images to the left) for all approximate finished sizes (sizes 1-3 have different chest and upper arm circumferences).
Boreal Knit Sweater by Bunnymuff
Garment Overview
Boreal is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Mona Zillah under the bunnymuff label. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a colorwork jumper using a sophisticated palette of multiple yarn colors to achieve a complex, layered aesthetic. The design incorporates strategic color changes throughout the construction, making it an engaging project for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore multi-color techniques.
Yarn and Materials
The Boreal pattern calls for 2 Ply Jumper Weight yarn by Jamieson & Smith, which is composed of 100% Shetland wool. This premium fiber choice provides excellent stitch definition and elasticity ideal for colorwork. Each ball yields approximately 125 yards (115 meters) per 25 grams.
The pattern utilizes a multi-color approach with the following yarn colors and approximate quantities varying by size:
- MC (Main Color 9113): 6 to 10 balls depending on size selection
- CC1 (Color 202): 2 to 4 balls
- CC2 (82 Mix): 3 to 6 balls
- CC3 (Color 65): 1 to 2 balls
- CC4 (Color 141): 1 to 2 balls
An alternate size option is also provided with adjusted yardage requirements. Knitters will require appropriate needles for 4-ply weight yarn, though specific needle size recommendations are referenced within the full pattern documentation.
Core Knitting Techniques
The Boreal pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that add visual interest and structural sophistication to the finished garment.
Short Row Shaping: The pattern utilizes the German Short Row method, also known as German Turn and Work (GTW). This advanced shaping technique creates nearly invisible transitions in the fabric by working partial rows without creating visible holes or gaps. German short rows are particularly valued in colorwork and fitted garment construction because they maintain clean lines and allow for seamless shaping without the telltale ladder effect of traditional short rows.
Bind-Off Method: The pattern specifies a Slipped Stitch Bind-Off as the suggested finishing technique. This method involves knitting two stitches, then using the right needle to pass both stitches from the right needle back to the left needle through their back loops, knitting these two stitches together, and knitting one alternate stitch. This process repeats across all stitches and creates a particularly elastic and refined edge finish.
Essential Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including:
- CO - Cast on (long-tail method unless otherwise specified)
- BO - Bind off
The combination of these fundamental stitches with the advanced shaping and multi-color techniques creates a garment suitable for intermediate knitters seeking to expand their technical repertoire.
