Product Description

Bootsie’s body is 5 inches/12.5cm high to the top of his hat and 10 inches/25.5cm in diameter. His arms and legs can be as long or short as you wish, my Bootsie has arms – including mittens 5inches/12.5cm long and legs including boots, are 7 inches/18cm long. I have left him pretty basic, so you can add your own personal touches. At the end of the pattern you will find a printable ‘Happy Holiday’ banner if you wish to use that.

Bootsie the Snowball: Free Knitted Toy Pattern by Phoenixknits

What is Being Made

Bootsie the Snowball is a charming knitted toy snowman character designed by Phoenixknits. The finished toy features a spherical body measuring 5 inches (12.5 cm) high and 10 inches (25.5 cm) in diameter at its widest point. The design includes articulated arms and legs that can be customized to your preferred length—the designer's version features 5-inch (12.5 cm) arms with mittens and 7-inch (18 cm) legs with boots. This intermediate-level project is intentionally kept simple to allow crafters to add their own personal embellishments and finishing touches.

Techniques and Construction Methods

Bootsie is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The toy is built through a combination of stockinet stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) and garter stitch (knitting every row) to create different textured sections. The pattern employs standard shaping techniques including decreases to form the rounded snowball body and dimensional limbs. The toy is worked in pieces and then assembled, with fibrefill stuffing used to create a three-dimensional, plush finished form.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch for creating fabric
  • Purl (p) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination for stockinet stitch
  • Knit 2 Together (k2tog) / Purl 2 Together (p2tog) – decrease stitches that shape the toy's rounded form
  • Stockinet Stitch (ss) – created by alternating knit and purl rows, produces a smooth, classic knitted fabric
  • Garter Stitch (gs) – created by knitting every row, produces a textured, ridged fabric
  • Increase 1 (inc1) – adds stitches to expand sections of the toy

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that creates a nicely proportioned finished toy. You will need standard knitting needles appropriate for DK yarn (typically US 6-8 / 4-5mm needles, though specific needle size should be confirmed in the full pattern). Additional materials include fibrefill stuffing for padding the body and limbs, clear multipurpose glue for assembly, and 8mm plastic toy eyes (optional—these can alternatively be embroidered). Optional finishing materials include powdered red rouge or red coloring pencil to add rosy cheeks to the snowman's face. The pattern also includes a printable 'Happy Holiday' banner for optional display with the finished toy.

Pattern Details and Customization

As a Christmas 2014 freebie pattern from Phoenixknits, Bootsie the Snowball is offered as a downloadable PDF. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and is presented across 8 pages of instructions. The designer intentionally leaves the toy basic to encourage personalization—crafters can customize arm and leg length, add embroidered details instead of plastic eyes, and create unique facial features using the suggested rouge or coloring pencil. This flexibility makes Bootsie an excellent project for knitters looking to develop their toy-making skills while expressing individual creativity.
