Product Description
Bonnie is a stunning little bolero jacket with cable edging and central tie. The body is knitted in two pieces, starting from the central back and using short-row shaping to create this fabulous sweep round the front.
Not only is Bonnie fun and a quick project to knit, the design includes interesting techniques such as integrating the cable, short row shaping and making use of the direction of the knit to create a better fit.
The sample was knit in Purl Alpaca Designs Fine. A substitute yarn is shown below.

What is Being Made
The Bonnie Bolero is a knitted shoulder wrap garment designed by independent designer Kari-Helene Rane. This bolero is a versatile layering piece available in five sizes ranging from extra small to extra large, with bust measurements from 73 cm (29 inches) to 112 cm (44 inches). The garment features curved front edges and is photographed in a size medium.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its distinctive silhouette. Short row shaping is used to create the curved front edges, allowing the bolero to fit smoothly around the shoulders and chest. The back and front pieces are worked in two halves, beginning at the centre back and working across to the underarm, then continuing up the front and finishing at the front shoulder. Special attention is given to finishing the row end edges of the fronts, which form the actual finished edges of the garment, requiring neat edge work throughout the project.
Stitches Used
The Bonnie Bolero utilizes two primary stitch patterns:
- Garter Stitch: The main fabric stitch worked over any number of stitches. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row on both the right side and wrong side, producing a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges.
- Right Cable Edging: A decorative 16-stitch panel with a 6-row repeat used to finish and embellish the edges of the bolero.
Materials and Tools
The Bonnie Bolero is worked in Purl Alpaca Fine, a luxury yarn composed of 100% English alpaca. This yarn is available in a DK weight and provides 116 meters per 50-gram ball. The sample shown is photographed in the shade Alpaca Storm. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 4 balls for the smallest size (XS) to 7 balls for the largest size (XL).
Knitting is worked on 4 mm knitting needles, or the size required to achieve the specified tension. The project requires a tension of 20 stitches and 40 rows to a 10-centimeter square when measured over garter stitch after light steaming. Additional notions needed include a blunt tapestry needle for weaving in ends, a cable needle for cable work, and a crochet hook for finishing details.
