Bonbon Shawl by Kimberly Gintar
Project Overview
Bonbon is an intermediate-level knitted shawl pattern designed by independent designer Kimberly Gintar. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished triangular shawl measuring approximately 26 inches (67 centimeters) after washing and blocking. The design is the first in Gintar's candy-themed collection of shawl patterns, specifically crafted to showcase the visual properties of variegated fingering weight yarns.
Yarn and Materials
The Bonbon shawl requires one or more skeins of variegated fingering weight yarn. The designer used 615 yards (562.4 meters) of Wollmeise 100% in the colorway Pfauenauge for the primary example, though the pattern accommodates other fingering weight options. The variegated nature of the yarn plays an important role in the visual impact of the finished shawl, as the color variations interact with the stitch pattern to create dynamic effects.
Required notions include:
- US 4 (3.5 mm) needles
- 8 stitch markers
- Cable needle
- Darning needle for weaving in ends
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches per 4 inches (10 centimeters) after blocking in garter stitch. While gauge is not critical for this design, variations in your personal gauge may affect the final dimensions and yardage requirements, so adjustments may be necessary depending on your individual tension.
Stitch Techniques and Construction
Bonbon features a cable stitch pattern that incorporates elements of garter stitch construction. The cable work is thoughtfully designed to interact with variegated yarn, allowing the color shifts in the yarn to enhance and highlight the dimensional qualities of the cable stitches. This interplay between stitch texture and yarn color creates a piece of candy-inspired visual interest, which inspired both the pattern name and the designer's candy-themed collection concept.
The pattern utilizes stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and cable crossings throughout the knitting process, making it accessible for intermediate knitters who are comfortable working with cables and managing multiple stitch markers.
Skill Level
Rated as beginner/intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with basic cable experience who are ready to work with fingering weight yarn and manage stitch markers for pattern tracking.
